Strengthen Your Faith for Healing

Healing has been provided for us at salvation. Jesus couldn’t experience sickness and disease or any other part of the curse because He was the incorruptible Seed. Therefore, He suffered torture, pain, and humiliation. He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him. He took stripes upon His back so that we would be healed. Healing is a part of our salvation.

Healing is already purchased. Paid for in full! The catch is, we must obtain it by faith. We must actually believe it is true for us personally.

We must nurture our faith with God’s Word if we are believing for healing in our bodies. The same applies if we are seeking healing for our minds. Faith for healing comes by hearing and feeding on God’s word about healing.

Hebrews 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

One of the most effective ways to nourish our faith is by speaking the word of God over ourselves. Declare with boldness that we believe and receive that promise for ourselves.

First and foremost, WE must be fully convinced that it is God’s will to heal US!

(If this is not what you believe, reading and meditating on these scriptures can help fix that.)

Psalm 103:1-5 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

In Christ, all our sins are forgiven. Don’t let Satan trick you into thinking you are not worthy. You are IN CHRIST! Christ is worthy!

Psalm 107:20 He sent His word and healed them and delivered them from their destruction.

Jesus IS the WORD. The Bible is Jesus in print. The Word heals and delivers from destruction. That is the nature of the Word. There is health and healing in God’s Word. In John 1:14 we see the Word became flesh. The word of God concerning healing will still become flesh if we believe it

Proverbs 4:20-21 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

Life and health are found in God’s Word.

Isaiah 53:5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

Jesus paid for our salvation, our healing, and our peace at the same time. These are all acts of mercy. Healing is a mercy. It has been paid for in full by the precious blood of Christ. This happened at the same time our salvation was purchased. We receive salvation through faith. We receive healing in the same way.

1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

Peter quotes Isaiah’s words, but he changes them to the past tense! By His stripes you WERE healed.

Isaiah 40:28-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, 31 But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

God gives power to the weak. Sickness is a weakness, and we are promised renewed strength as we wait upon Him.

Matthew 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Every sickness and every disease. Jesus healed them all, with the exception of one group of people. His own people. Be careful who you listen to when believing for healing. The devil will use well-meaning Christians to fill you with negative thoughts and unbelief that can undermine your faith.

Matthew 13:58 Now He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

Unbelief is the main reason people don’t receive healing. Unbelief can come from ignorance of the truth, wrong thinking, wrong believing, or in this case, familiarity. When unbelief is present, your faith is weak and needs to be fed God’s word.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Don’t let bad reports or persisting symptoms steal your joy or rob you of confidence. Staying positive is a real challenge. Doctors, symptoms, and negative thoughts seem to speak to you in a very loud voice.

Who is Israel, and what defines a Jew?

For any believer seeking to understand their Identity in Christ it is necessary to have a clear understanding of who Israel is and how that identity has changed with the fulfillment of the Old Covenant and the ratifying of the New.

Misunderstanding who the Israel of God is will affect our understanding of messianic prophecy and our identity in Christ.

Are ethnic Jews still God’s chosen people?

Are Jews who reject Christ still going to Heaven?

What did Paul mean when he said in Romans 11:26 “all Israel will be saved?”

It all starts with Abraham’s covenant

The promise to Abraham and his seed involved several key components: a great nation, abundant descendants (like the stars of the sky and sand of the seashore), a promised land, and the assurance that through him, all the families of the earth would be blessed. The promise also includes a future for his seed to possess their enemies’ gates, and it is often interpreted in both a physical and spiritual sense, with Jesus seen as the ultimate fulfillment of the spiritual blessing for all nations.

Key elements of the covenant:

  • A great nation: God promised to make Abraham into a great and mighty nation.
  • Many descendants: Abraham’s descendants would be countless, like the stars of the heavens and the sand on the seashore.
  • The promised land: Abraham’s descendants would be given a specific and vast territory.
  • Blessing to all nations: A central part of the promise was that through Abraham, all families on earth would be blessed.
  • Blessing and protection: God promised to bless those who bless Abraham and curse those who curse him.

Fulfillment of the covenant:

  • Physical fulfillment:

The promise was fulfilled literally for the physical nation of Israel, which received the land and became a great nation with numerous descendants.

  • Spiritual fulfillment:

The New Testament teaches that the promise of blessing to all nations is spiritually fulfilled through Jesus Christ, the descendant of Abraham, in whom all who have faith are blessed.

Galatians 3:16-18 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect. 18 For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

vs. 26-29 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

This passage makes it clear that Abraham’s seed and heir is identified by being a believer in Christ. It is only the children of promise that qualify for Abraham’s inheritance, and it is faith alone that qualifies a person as a seed of Abraham. The Children of the flesh are identified as ethnic Jews who are born from Abraham’s loins but refuse to believe in the promise of Christ. Just because one is born from the loins of Abraham does not mean he is a true Jew.

John 8:37-44 “I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. 38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father.”  39 They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. 41 You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father—God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Jesus said if you don’t love me, God is NOT your Father. Has that changed? Jesus is telling them that their works reveal their nature, and their nature reveals their father, not their bloodline.

Galatians 3:7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.

Again, regardless of bloodline, any Jew who does not believe that Christ is the son of the living God is not considered Abraham’s seed. A Jew who is born in the bloodline of Isaac and does not believe in Christ is no better than a son of Hagar, a son of the flesh.

What is a Jew?

Romans 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

Once the New Covenant was fully ratified, being born an Israelite, of Jewish blood, does not make you a Jew, nor does it make you God’s chosen people. Christ is the chosen seed to whom the promises of Abraham apply. It is only in Him that we find salvation. The promise of God was to Abraham and his seed, meaning, to Abraham and to Christ. If you are Christ’s, then YOU are Abraham’s seed and YOU are heir to the promise. If you are not Christ’s, then you are not an heir to the promises of Abraham nor the promises of the New Covenant.

Romana 9:6-7 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” 8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.

Pay close attention to this passage. “They are not all Israel who are of Israel, nor are they all children because they are Abraham’s seed.”

This scripture tells us, just because one is born an Israelite, a physical descendant of Abraham, does not make them an Israelite or a true child of God.

“In Isaac, your seed shall be called.” (In the Child of Promise)

Isaac was the physical child of promise that the spiritual child of promise (Jesus) would come through.

Ephesians 2:14-16 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, 16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

This passage speaks of Christ breaking down the “dividing wall of hostility” between Jew and Gentile, creating “one new person in place of the two,” forming one body in Christ. This is a unified people in Christ, which supersedes former ethnic distinctions, and replaces the Old Covenant that Christ fulfilled, and then becomes the spiritual fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant.

Jesus fulfilled the covenant that the Jews are still actively trying to keep. They reject Jesus as God’s answer and their messiah. Jesus put to death the enmity, and the Jews strive to keep the enmity alive. They, like all unbelievers, are cut off.

In Christ, all covenants with man have been, or are being fulfilled as we speak.

Is God done with Israel? NO!

Romans 11:1-2a I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew.

God didn’t cast away Israel; He loved them so much that He fulfilled the Old Covenant made with Israel, and then made a New Covenant based on faith, not works.

He didn’t cast away his people; He made a new and living way available to Jews and Gentiles alike that only requires faith, not the keeping of the Law.

It’s not that He rejected the Jews; instead, He favored them by fulfilling the covenant obligations that Israel was unable to fulfill themselves, and then offered them a New Covenant that is the fulfillment of God’s original promise to the Jews through Abraham’s Covenant.

God didn’t reject Israel; He showed them extreme favor by fulfilling their covenant obligations and then He changed the definition of an Israelite. Now, an Israelite is one who is born of the Spirit, of the incorruptible seed of Christ, not of a bloodline.

Romans 11: 17-18 And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, 18 do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

Vs. 20-21 Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either.

Vs. 23 And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

In this passage, we see that God did not spare the natural branches (Israel), but in verse 23, we are reassured that all the Jews have to do is believe, and they will be grafted back in.

The parable of the wicked vinedressers.

Matt 21: 33-41b“Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. 34 Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. 35 And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. 37 Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?” 41 They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing, And it is marvelous in our eyes’?

43 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it. 44 And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

45 Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them.

In this parable, the symbolism couldn’t be clearer. It is obvious that the landowner represents God, the vinedressers are Israel, and the landowner’s son is Jesus.

What happens to the vinedressers after they kill the Son? Verse 41 says that the owner (God) will destroy them and verse 43 says that the kingdom will be taken from them (Israel) and given to another nation bearing the fruits of the kingdom. We know that the vinedressers are Israel because is verse 45 the Israelite religious leaders who keep the law knew he was talking about them.

The ”other nation” in verse 43 refers to the Church, a royal priesthood, A Holy nation.

Galatians 4:21-31 Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. 23 But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, 24 which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar— 25 for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children— 26 but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all. 27 For it is written:

“Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband.”

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. 29 But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. 30 Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” 31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.

Paul explains the spiritual symbolism of Hagar and Sarah, and physical and spiritual Jerusalem, and the difference between being born of the flesh and born of the promise.

The bondwoman must be cast out for the children of promise to receive their inheritance. Could this be a reason that the church hasn’t walked in the fullness of God’s promises? Does the church need to quit coddling Israel and start earnestly interceding for her salvation?

NOTE: Abraham’s descendants fall into two categories: The children of the flesh, and the children of promise. The children of the bondwoman are children of Ishmael, children born of the flesh. All those who are currently rejecting Christ and insisting on living by the law are no better than the children of Hagar. They are considered fake Jews, Ishmaelites, regardless of whether they are physical descendants of Isaac. The children of promise are all those that believe in the Seed, Christ.

Spiritually speaking, all ethnic Jews who reject Christ are aligning themselves with the children of Hagar and Earthly Jerusalem, not the children of promise and the Heavenly Jerusalem.

This passage tells us that modern-day Jerusalem, which is in bondage with her children, is seen as Ishmaelites, and they have no part in the inheritance with the free children, which is the Church.

Galatians 5:4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

All those who try to keep the law are estranged from Christ and have fallen from grace. This applies to all people including Jews.

Romans 4:13-17   13 For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

(NOTE:) Verse 13 says that the promise was not to be fulfilled in his natural seed, but THROUGH “the righteousness of faith”. The Jews who insist on living by the Law, insist on living in transgression. Verse 14 says plainly that if the unbelieving Jews become heirs, then our faith in Jesus is made void and the promise made of no effect.

16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did;

The Centurion Encounter

Matthew 8:10-13 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.

In this passage, we see Jesus commending the great faith of the centurion, while at the same time rebuking all of Israel. He then adds that many from the East and West, meaning Gentiles will come and sit down in the Kingdom while they (the sons of the kingdom) will be cast into outer darkness. It is important to note that Jesus was not speaking in parables; He was speaking literally.

Earthly Jerusalem is now seen as Sodom, and Egypt

Revelation 11:8 And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

Isaiah 3:8-9 For Jerusalem stumbled, And Judah is fallen, Because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory. 9 The look on their countenance witnesses against them, and they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.

Physical Jerusalem is now, spiritually speaking, no better than Sodom and Egypt. God has placed the unbelieving Jews and the current city of Jerusalem in the same category as Sodom and Egypt.

Understand the symbolism:

  • Sodom: This comparison points to Jerusalem’s sexual immorality and sinfulness.
  • Egypt: This comparison signifies a state of spiritual slavery and hostility toward God, much like ancient Israel’s experience in Egypt.
  • Physical vs. Symbolic: The text makes it clear this is a spiritual and symbolic name, but it points to the physical city of Jerusalem as the specific location. The phrase “where also their Lord was crucified” is a clear geographical marker for Jerusalem.

We really need to ask ourselves some questions:

How has the Church been affected by the wrong belief that the ethnic Jews are still God’s chosen people?

How does it affect you personally?

Does it affect your understanding of the Bible as a whole?

Does it affect our interpretation of prophecy?

What about eschatology?

How can the Gentiles make the ethnic Jews jealous if they treat them as equals or even superiors?

Why is this not being preached and made clear?

JESUS IS COMING!

Gluttony: The Deceptive Sin Affecting Believers

Recently, I was seeking God about being completely submitted to Him. I felt like I was submitting to the best of my ability, but I sensed that something was standing in the way of my relationship with Him. So, I asked Him to search my heart and reveal to me anything that was hindering my walk with Him, and specifically anything standing in the way of the intimacy I was desiring with the Lord.

Be careful what you ask for, and be sure that you truly want answers. If you are sincere, He will give you the answers you seek.

Almost immediately, He showed me that I was in bondage to a spirit of gluttony. I knew it was true as soon as He spoke that to me. At the same time, I knew that He was going to set me free from it. I was bummed and yet relieved at the same time.

When I began to consider this new revelation and pray into it, I saw that gluttony is one of the most overlooked and accepted sins among Christians. It certainly was in my life. That being said, let’s address this sin that is a deceptive stronghold, and a killer of Christians and non-Christians alike.

Satan’s agenda.

Satan attacks us in many ways, but he always comes with the same agenda. To steal, kill, and destroy. That is his “modus operandi.” So, no matter what type of bondage he traps us in, it always has an agenda that is a product of his fallen nature. He can’t help himself; he’s a thief, a killer, and a destroyer.

Gluttony steals our health and robs us of our identity. It destroys our witness, our influence in the kingdom of God, and our ability to be holy as God is holy. It kills our confidence, our effectiveness in ministry, and eventually kills our physical bodies, sending us to an early grave. This is one of his favorite tactics to keep people from reaching their potential.

John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

I want to expose the details of Satan’s deception that many of my brothers and sisters in Christ have fallen prey to. Writing about this and helping others is a part of the process on my road to freedom from gluttony. My hope is that this teaching will help equip believers with the understanding and the tools to fight against this very deceptive spiritual attack.

Don’t be deceived into thinking that gluttony or overeating is only an insignificant vice. It is a spiritual attack on our identity and our divine purpose. There is a demonic spirit behind it, and this sin has far-reaching ramifications.

Proverbs 23:19-21 Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way. 20 Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat; 21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

Interestingly, gluttony is mentioned in the same breath as a drunkard. The modern-day term for a drunkard is an alcoholic. It is easy for us to see the devastating effects of alcoholism on our society. The broken families, the financial ruin, incarcerations, and the senseless loss of lives from drunk drivers and other bad decisions made while drunk. Yet, for some reason, we don’t view gluttony in the same light. But according to the above scripture, God does.

Gluttony does not impair our ability to think clearly. We don’t go to jail for over-eating and driving. However, we do risk others’ lives when we are gluttonous and operate a motor vehicle. Gluttony can lead to heart attacks or strokes that can kill just as easily as a drunk driver.

The worst part is that it affects our relationship with the Lord. It does impact others’ lives, and it disqualifies us from some of the greatest promises available to us as believers.

Our lack of understanding has allowed Satan to blind us to the sin of gluttony. Past the point of avoidance and into acceptance. Our worldly thinking has categorized this sin as small and unimportant. However, there is no such thing as a small sin; they all produce darkness and separation from God. They erode our confidence and weaken our faith.

Truthfully, we don’t even acknowledge gluttony as a sin in our lives, therefore, we never repent of it. We just admit we are overweight and say, “Pray for me, I’m working on it.” We try to diet and exercise to solve the problem on our own. We fall victim to guilt, condemnation, and shame when it doesn’t work and we repeatedly return to old eating habits. It causes us to think less of ourselves than what God thinks about us. All the while, we are taking medications for high cholesterol and heart disease. We have chronic pain and deteriorating joints, and a multitude of debilitating diseases and ailments.

There is a multi-billion-dollar industry built around our bondage to gluttony. It seems that every week, we see a new fad diet or “magic pill” that promises results, enticing people to jump on the bandwagon and try the newest “miracle” craze. We want a solution that makes us lose weight while allowing us to continue in our gluttonous lifestyle.

If we remain bound to gluttony, our quality of life soon becomes a shadow of what God intended. Our impact on the kingdom of God is severely diminished, and it will eventually cause us to die at an early age. Satan has deceived us into accepting it and just learning to live with it. He has flown gluttony in, under our radar, and built one of the most deceptive and devastating strongholds in the Church.

The harm that gluttony causes others.

The Bible says, “a little leaven leavens the whole lump”. This is found in Galatians 5:9 and 1 Corinthians 5:6. It means that any seemingly small sin, false teaching, or wrong believing can have a far-reaching and destructive effect on an individual or a group of people.

Gluttony doesn’t just affect you, but also your entire circle of influence. Your family, your friends, your colleagues, and the fellowship of believers you are joined to.

Any time a believer is bound by some level of demonic deception, their spiritual growth and progress is hindered, and their gifts and graces are suppressed. When the Spirit of God moves through a dirty vessel, it is filtered and flavored with the sin and impurity of that vessel. It doesn’t represent Christ very well.

Have you ever taken a drink from a cheap bottle of water that tastes like the plastic it is stored in? Or maybe you drank water from a well that tastes like sulfur and smells like rotten eggs? You can’t even enjoy the water because you are so distracted by the off-putting flavor and smell. Because of the offensive flavor, you drink very little and try to find something else to drink. It is the same principle. Most blessings from God come through other people, and we receive those blessings more easily when they come through a pure vessel.

Gluttony is a sin that rarely gets addressed. Despite it being explicitly pointed out as sin in scripture, we have turned a blind eye and don’t take it seriously in our churches, ministries, in our families, and in our personal lives.

In the case of gluttony. We don’t realize that we are holding back a part of us that is extremely important to the Lord. His temple. I was heartbroken when He showed me I was guilty of this. Although I made changes in my diet, eliminating almost all sugar and starches, and eating way less processed foods, I was still eating far more than what my body needed to be healthy. I was filling God’s temple with things that He never approved of. Even good food will kill you if you don’t eat in moderation and exercise self-control.

Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It is God’s empowerment by the Holy Spirit to resist temptations, suppress fleshly desires, and make choices aligned with God’s will. Without the Holy Spirit’s help, we are powerless to overcome the bondage of gluttony.

Let’s be clear: You don’t have to be overweight to be a glutton. Anyone can be bound by gluttony. I know people who exercise constantly just so they can eat and drink anything they want and not gain weight. They justify their fleshly impulses by physically working hard to avoid being fat. Bulimia is a manifestation of gluttony where a person binges on food and then makes themselves vomit to keep from gaining weight.

Gluttony can manifest itself in any addiction to food. How about coffee, soda, or even diet soda? Any food addiction is a manifestation of the spirit of gluttony. When we experience a lack of self-control where food is concerned, it should raise some red flags. When our desire for food controls our behavior in any way, it has more power over us than it should.

I used to drink a whole pot of coffee every day. Sometimes more. I loved coffee! Then one day, as I was praying and repeatedly declaring, “God, I trust You,” the Lord spoke to me and asked, “Do you trust me with your health, Jack?” I immediately said, “Yes, Lord!” He said clearly, “Then stop drinking coffee.” That was four years ago, and I haven’t had coffee since. When God puts His finger on an issue and we cooperate with Him, He empowers us with grace to obey.

Our Body? NO! God’s Temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

We have been purchased by the precious blood of Christ. We are no longer owners and masters of our spirit, soul, and bodies. We are to relinquish our right to govern and submit completely to His will. Many believers are completely blind to this truth. They make their own decisions and continue to rule and reign over their own lives.

The things we sacrifice for gluttony.

God has given us the “earnest” of the Spirit at salvation.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

As if having the down payment of the Holy Spirit wasn’t enough, we see maybe the greatest promise in the Bible found in John 14. Jesus emphasized obedience to His word three times in this passage. His final comment is staggering,

John 14:15-18If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

John 14:22-24 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

In John 14 we see that the way we show our love for God is by obedience to His word. We not only have the promise of the Holy Spirit, but in addition to that, we see that through obedience to God, we can have the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit making their home in us. We have the promise of Jesus manifesting Himself to us and the Trinity abiding in us.

In 1st John, we see that by obeying God, we show love for our brethren.

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.

So, catch this:

1 Peter 1:15-16 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

God is Holy.

1 John 4:8 “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

God is Love.

If God is Holy, and God is Love, then Love is Holy!

Have you ever considered that? Our love for God is expressed by our obedience to His word. Our love for people is expressed first, by obedience to His word, and then our behavior toward others as described in 1st Corinthians 13;4-8

Satan does not want us to express our love for God because this will inevitably produce holiness in our lives. So, he tricks us into being disobedient through the sin of gluttony. Obedience is God’s “love language.”

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

If we present our bodies as a living sacrifice daily in prayer, holy and acceptable to God, we will find the grace to obey and a built-in accountability to help us get free and stay free from gluttony.

Anyone who sincerely loves God will not willfully disobey Him. If we find ourselves struggling to obey and losing the battle, that tells us that our heart is pure, but something is fighting against our desire to obey Him. This is spiritual warfare.

Taking the first step toward freedom.

We can’t fix this on our own. We need God’s help. The good news is, He is ready, willing, and more than able to get the job done. However, we must cooperate. It starts with acknowledging that we are living in willful sin and willful disobedience. We must repent for it and begin applying faith for our deliverance.

Freedom won’t happen overnight. If you don’t think Satan will fight us on this, you are sadly mistaken. He won’t give up a stronghold, which is his fortified position, without a fight. So be warned; once you make a decision to break free from the chains of gluttony, he will throw every temptation at you that he can think of to keep you snared. Spiritual warfare ain’t no joke, so be prepared to make a change. Specifically, your commitment to God’s word.

Oh, thank God for the truth and power of His word!

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Freedom is as simple as repenting and committing yourself to abiding in God’s word until truth sets you free. “But what about the stronghold that must be torn down?” I am glad you asked.

Jeremiah 23:29 “Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Once we repent and ask for God’s involvement, all we must do is keep it before Him in prayer, thanking Him for our freedom, expecting results, and remain committed to His word.

We have an enemy. He has an agenda. He hates us and is continually trying to kill us. The deception of gluttony is a slow and miserable death that Satan glories in. He kills us to hurt our Father.

We know from the Old Testament that God is very particular about His temple. Shouldn’t we be also? I don’t know about you, but I am no longer going to be used by Satan to hurt myself, God, or the people He has placed in my life. How about you?

JESUS IS COMING!
