Understanding the Role of a Prophetic Teacher

A prophetic teacher is an individual who functions in both the five-fold ministry gifts of a teacher and a prophet. To understand this role, it is helpful to consider the distinct yet overlapping functions of the prophet and the teacher:

The Prophet:

 * Speaks for God: A primary role of a prophet is to be God’s mouthpiece, communicating His messages, will, and perspective to people. This can involve:

 * Foretelling (predicting the future): While not their only function, prophets sometimes reveal future events.

 * Forth telling (speaking relevant truth to the present): This involves declaring God’s truth about current situations, calling for repentance, justice, and obedience.

 * Revelation: Prophets often receive direct communication from God through visions, dreams, impressions, or a clear sense of His voice.

 * Exhortation, encouragement, and comfort: Prophecy that focuses on building up the church and promoting spiritual growth within the body.

 * Discerning of spirits: Having the ability to discern the presence and nature of spiritual forces. Pinpointing the deceptions of the enemy and exposing their strategies

The Teacher:

 * Explains and interprets God’s Word: Teachers have a gift for clearly explaining and applying the Scriptures (the “logos”).

 * Focuses on understanding and doctrine: They help people grasp biblical truths, understand theological concepts, and build a foundation of sound doctrine.

 * Equips and trains: Teachers equip believers for Christian living and ministry by imparting knowledge and understanding.

The Prophetic Teacher:

A prophetic teacher uniquely blends these two roles. Here’s what that often looks like:

* Biblical Foundation with Prophetic Insight: They ground their teaching in the solid foundation of Scripture but also bring a fresh, Spirit-led insight (“rhema” – a timely word from God) to their explanation. They can illuminate the written word with present-day relevance and application based on prophetic understanding.

* Revealing God’s Heart and Mind: They don’t just explain what the Bible says, but through their prophetic sensitivity, they can also convey the heart and intention behind the text in a way that resonates with the current culture.

* Applying Prophetic Revelation to Instruction: They may use prophetic words, visions, or insights to illustrate, emphasize, or provide a specific direction within their teaching.

* Equipping Believers to Hear God: They often teach on how to hear God’s voice and develop their own spiritual discernment.

* Addressing Current Issues with Biblical Truth and Prophetic Perspective: They can speak to contemporary issues and challenges with both a strong biblical understanding and a prophetic awareness of God’s perspective on those matters.

* Balance of Logos and Rhema: They understand the importance of both the written Word and the spoken word of the Spirit, allowing each to inform and enhance the other.

* Nurturing and Guiding: Like teachers, they nurture and instruct believers, but they do so with a prophetic edge, guiding them not just in knowledge but also in spiritual sensitivity and obedience to God’s current leading.

* Correction: They are vital in identifying and correcting doctrinal errors. They expose and correct wrong doctrine in the Church by skillfully dismantling strongholds of wrong thinking and wrong believing, healing itchy ears, and inspiring people to seek intimacy with the Father.

Summary:

A Prophetic Teacher is one who combines the ability to accurately teach and explain the Word of God with the ability to hear and communicate God’s timely word and perspective. They bring both a solid foundation of biblical truth and a dynamic, Spirit-led insight to their instruction, breaking strongholds of false teaching and wrong believing. They equip the Church to walk in the Spirit and live supernaturally.

A Prophetic Teacher’s ministry is vital in the End-Time Church, bringing understanding and unity across all denominational and cultural barriers.
