What is The Kingdom of God?

Matthew 6:31-34 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

          If we are to seek first the Kingdom, what exactly are we seeking and where are we seeking it? Are we seeking to be involved with a church and engage in religious activity? Are we seeking to build a ministry with multiple outreaches? Are simply going and spreading the good news of Jesus? These are legitimate questions that must be answered.

          What did Jesus say about the Kingdom?

Luke 17:20-21 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”

          Understand that the Kingdom of God is not something we can see externally, but an outpost of Heaven residing in our hearts, a garden planted inside us, much like the Garden of Eden, that we keep and tend to provide a holy place where the King desires to abide. When Jesus said to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, this is a clear call to all believers to abide in Him and seek the expansion of His Kingdom within us.

What does it mean to seek the Kingdom inside us?

          The Garden of Eden is an Old Testament type and model of our recreated spirits. When we are born again, God recreates within us a Kingdom, (a garden) that we are to steward. In our inner man stands the Kingdom of God, the Garden of God, the outpost of Heaven where the Holy Spirit resides. Instead of tending a natural Garden like Adam, we must grow and steward the Kingdom of God in our hearts.

Proverbs 4:20-27 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart;
22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, And put perverse lips far from you.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, And your eyelids look right before you.
26 Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established.
27 Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.

           In the center of the passage above we see the command to keep our heart with all diligence. Surrounding that passage are the instructions on how to keep it. In fact, the entire chapter is an instruction on keeping and guarding our hearts.

          We know from scripture that the Garden of Eden did not cover the whole Earth but was in a very small area in Africa. Adam was placed in the garden and was instructed to fill the whole earth and have dominion, bring it into subjection, and subdue it. In essence, Adam was to grow the Garden of Eden to fill the whole Earth. We are to steward the Kingdom in such a way that it fills our entire being, subduing the carnal nature and taking dominion over it.
