Our Love for God is measured by Our Love for His Word
Our love for God will never rise above our respect for, honor of, and love for His Word.
Think about that statement. If someone claims to love God but ignores the teachings of the Bible, their claim lacks integrity. As Christians, a high honor for God naturally results in a high honor and obedience to the truths He has communicated to us.
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.
If we don’t love God’s Word, we don’t truly love Him. That is not harsh; that is what Jesus said to His disciples three times in the same chapter just before He went to the cross.
We cannot truly love someone if we don’t know them. God reveals His nature, His character, and His will through His Word. The primary way we get to know God is through His Word. Our love and devotion to Him is measured by our love and devotion to His written Word.
When we immerse ourselves in the Bible, we safeguard our faith from distortions about who He is. It protects us from believing false doctrine, it gives us spiritual discernment to judge between what is right and what is almost right. It ensures that our faith, worship, and love are directed toward the true God, as described in Psalm 138.
Psalm 138:2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.
If you would like to grow in your love for God, then you must grow in your love for His Word. A wonderful place to begin is by reading and meditating on Psalm 119.
Psalm 119 is a passionate, exhaustive meditation on the perfection and beauty of God’s Word. Its consistent theme is devotion to Scripture, emphasizing that true wisdom, joy, and guidance are found by aligning one’s life with God’s Word.
Psalm 119 has several unique and profound characteristics:
It is the longest chapter in the Bible, with 176 verses. That is not an accident.
The author mentions the Word of God in nearly every single verse, using eight primary Hebrew synonyms (law, testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, judgments, word, and way).
It is also written as an intricate acrostic poem tied to the Hebrew alphabet. It contains 22 stanzas (one for each Hebrew letter), and each stanza consists of eight verses.
Rather than having a single narrative, its “story” is a deeply emotional, experiential guide on how to survive adversity by anchoring ones heart and mind in divine truth.
The psalmist (who remains unnamed in the text) shares their personal struggles with affliction, persecution, and isolation. Their realization is that God’s Word is not a burden of strict rules, but the only stable refuge when the rest of the world crumbles around them.
Meditation on Psalm 119 will help us understand and grow in our love for God’s Word. As we give ourselves to the Scriptures with humility, faith, and obedience, our hearts will be strengthened, our love for God will deepen, and our lives will be anchored more firmly in the truth that never changes. Let us not merely admire God’s Word from a distance, but treasure it, obey it, and feed upon it daily like the bread of life it is.
Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
