If you are a born-again Christian, there is a war going on inside you right now. Maybe you have noticed—two opposing forces: one good and one evil. One is your Spirit, born of incorruptible seed and made holy; the other is your flesh, still bearing a fallen nature. Only one will win this war. And the one who wins is entirely up to you.
Your flesh is unholy and selfish; it wants comfort, wants to be indulged, and wants its desires to be fulfilled. Your Spirit desires Christ, seeks spiritual nourishment and engagement, and longs to gain mastery over the flesh so that you can become everything Christ paid for you to be. Your flesh wants to be entertained; your Spirit wants to be disciplined and diligent. Your flesh wants to scroll, chill, and waste time. Your Spirit wants to pray and is hungry for God. Your Spirit knows the time is short and should not be wasted.
Victory in this war requires three daily disciplines: feeding your Spirit with truth, guarding your heart from competing influences, and using the sword of the Spirit intentionally.
And here’s the truth almost nobody tells you in church. If you don’t fight this war on purpose, intentionally, the flesh wins by default. Not because the flesh is stronger; It’s not even close, but because you never showed up to the fight. Galatians 5:17 says it plainly,
Galatians 5:17 (NKJV) For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
Take a look at this verse in the Amplified Bible.
Galatians 5:17 (AMPC) For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do.
Your flesh and your Spirit are opposed to each other, not in a minor disagreement but in a bitter conflict—a war. And, like it or not, wars have casualties.
What kind of casualties are we talking about? What is at risk of being destroyed in this war? God-ordained opportunities, God’s blessings, your relationships, your health, your prosperity, your marriage, your ministry, your inheritance in Christ, and your witness for Jesus. That is just the short list.
All of it can be destroyed on this battlefield while you’re busy telling yourself, “I’ll deal with it later.” There is no later. Later is never guaranteed. We only have today. The time is short, Saints. You know in your heart that there is so much more available to you; you just haven’t put the pieces together yet and figured out why. To understand how to enter this fight and win, we must first see what Scripture reveals about the battle. Let’s begin with Ephesians 6.
Ephesians 6:10-12 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
This Scripture exposes the enemy, but it also reveals God’s provision: He did not leave you defenseless. He gave you some amazing armor for protection, and the most powerful weapon in existence: His Word. He also gave you instructions in His Word on how to equip yourself with the armor and use the Word to overcome the flesh.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
These weapons match the nature of the conflict: Your war is spiritual, so your weapons are spiritual, supernatural, and given by God. You are not just fighting against your physical body; you have a spirit being that is influencing your flesh and trying to steal from you, kill you, and destroy any evidence that you are a Christian.
His name is Satan. He leads you into temptations, brings up past failures, manipulates your emotions, and attacks you at every turn. His goal is to make your flesh scream so loud that you can’t even hear the voice of the Spirit. He is crafty, skilled at deception, and relentless in his attacks. But the good news is, he has already been defeated. You just need to learn how to enforce the victory you’ve already won. Satan knows that once you learn to fight Him biblically, he is finished! He knows that you will lead others to the same truth, and the possibility of that revelation multiplying in others terrifies him.
Enforcing that victory that Christ won for us begins with three essential disciplines. The first determines what grows strongest within you.
- Discipline one: Feed your Spirit TRUTH.
There is a natural and spiritual law you cannot avoid. Whatever you feed grows. Whatever you starve dies. For your Spirit to get strong, it must be fed and watered with truth, nurtured through obedience, and exposed to the light of God’s Word. The word of God is the foundation you must base your life on. Anything else is shaky ground, sinking sand.
If you truly believe that God is real and He created all things, including you, you ought to be very interested in what He has already said. There is no such thing as loving God and not loving His Word. Your love for Him will never rise above your love and commitment to His Word. That is one of the biggest problems in the body of Christ right now. God’s people have lost their reverence for God’s Word.
James 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
That promise raises an important question: What does implanted mean? Some translations say “engrafted.” The Greek word is “emphutos” pronounced “em’-foo-tos,” and this word is only used once in the New Testament. If you are familiar with surgical implants, you know what implanted means. The same goes for a skin graft or a plant with a grafted branch. These examples tell us exactly what this verse means.
An implant takes living tissue and grafts it into another living tissue to make both one. If grafted properly, the thing being grafted becomes a living part of the thing it is grafted into. The Word of God is alive! And it should be alive in you. For that to take place, you need to plant it, and graft it into your soul until it becomes a living part of you.
Spiritually speaking, the living Word of God is fastened into your born-again, living spirit. This continues until the living Word becomes a part of you. You become one with the Word. To receive the implanted Word, you must be a doer of the Word. If you are not a doer of the Word, you have not received it; you have only heard it, and that implant will be rejected. It will not be engrafted into your heart.
This is why simply hearing truth is not enough. You must engage God’s truth until it becomes a living part of you. You must become the Word.
Truth Is Both Armor and a Weapon.
If truth must become part of you, how does it function in the war?
Ephesians 6 tells us about the war we are in, identifies the enemy we are fighting, and explains the armor and weapon provided for us.
Ephesians 6:10-18 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints
This passage clarifies the purpose of the armor and the sword: they are not for marching out into the enemy’s domain and taking new territory for the Kingdom of God. It’s about taking a stand and defending the Kingdom of God within you.
With that purpose in view, we can focus on the first and most important piece of armor, because if you have this one piece equipped and established, all the other pieces of armor will naturally become stronger, become clearer, and fit securely in their proper place.
Ephesians 6: 14a says: Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, and this is the piece I want you to focus on.
The King James version says, having your “LOINS” girt about with truth. The Greek word is “osphus” (pronounced os-foos’); it literally means procreative power. The use of the Word LOINS is significant because the loins are where man’s reproductive parts are located. The reproductive part of your heart is your mind. This is where the war is fought. The enemy is relentless in his efforts to sow and water bad seed into your heart so that his lies can be implanted and engrafted into your heart and choke out the Word. God has another plan.
1 Peter 1:13-16 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”
That connection between the loins and the mind leads to a crucial principle: Your mind has procreative power and will conceive and reproduce whatever it is focused on. It reproduces whatever you consistently look at, hear, meditate on, imagine, and talk about. This is why truth is the most important piece of armor. If your focus is God and His unshakeable truth, you will build a stronghold of faith and confidence in Him that will carry you to victory in every battle.
In practical terms, staying engaged with God’s Word isn’t reading a daily verse on your phone and closing the app. It’s abiding in it, memorizing it, praying it, speaking it, and letting it correct you when your flesh wants to argue with God.
When that engagement becomes a way of life, then, when temptation knocks, truth will be the first thing you reach for, not the last resort after you’ve already fallen.
Truth takes root more readily when it is not competing with other influences for control of your heart. That reality brings us to the second essential discipline.
- Discipline two: Guard your heart.
Feeding your Spirit puts truth in; guarding your heart keeps corruption out. That makes this one of the most significant and practical disciplines in the Christian life.
Proverbs 4:23 (AMPC) Keep and guard your heart with all vigilance and above all that you guard, for out of it flow the springs of life.
Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.
Scripture shows where that guarding begins: by practicing daily self-denial. Not one time at an altar call—daily.
Self-denial is not punishment. It’s training. It’s telling your flesh, “You do not run this show, and you don’t control my life.” Start small, but start today. Limit the time you spend on screens. Skip the extra snack you don’t need. Get up when your body begs for five more minutes in bed.” These aren’t random disciplines; they’re reps. Every time you deny the flesh in something small, you’re building the strength to deny it in something big when temptations come to destroy you. If you can’t tell your body “No” to a snack, don’t be surprised when you can’t say no to sin.
Self-denial trains you to say no; guarding your mind determines what you must say no to. You must guard what enters your mind. Your mind is where the war is waged, and right now you are allowing too many thoughts on that battlefield. What you see, hear, and think about becomes what you crave. And what you crave becomes what you do. What you do becomes who you are. It shapes your identity.
You don’t fall into sin overnight. You scroll into it. You binge into it. You meditate on it. You talk about it. Chronic illness can come the same way.
If you meditate on ungodly things long enough, your mind will conceive it and work hard to make sure it is produced in your life. If you meditate on the truth of God’s Word and His promises, your mind will conceive them and make sure they are produced. When temptations come to call, you must take those thoughts captive, refuse to entertain them, meditate on them, or give voice to them. Instead, fill your mind and your mouth with God’s Word and His promises. You fight with the sword of the spoken word, just like Jesus did in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). You don’t just do this once or twice. You do it until the devil leaves. Until hope and faith are established.
What you must not do is straddle the fence and allow both good and bad thoughts to bounce around in your head. If you do, you will be double-minded, confused, unstable, and frustrated in your walk with God. Look at what James says about being double-minded:
James 1:2-8 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
James shows the danger of a divided mind. Therefore, to walk in the Spirit, your mind must be renewed to the truth. Which means you have to stop feeding the flesh by filling your mind with the world’s garbage.
You feed the flesh every time you scroll mindlessly on the internet, binge a TV show, or escape into ungodly entertainment.
You starve the Spirit every time you skip church, neglect to pray, or put off reading and listening to God’s Word. You starve the Spirit every time you walk away from His presence for just a few more minutes of something meaningless and empty.
Taken together, these habits reveal why it is hard to establish a stronghold of engrafted truth in your heart while feeding on a steady diet of poison. You must stop poisoning your mind and dividing your heart. You cannot feed on truth for 30 minutes and feast on the world’s filth for hours upon hours and expect to grow spiritually and have great faith.
The change can begin with the first choice of the day: Before you touch your phone in the morning, pick up your Bible first. Before you feed your mind the world’s noise, feed on truth. Let the Spirit have the first meal of your day, not the leftovers. Don’t feed your body three hot meals a day and the Spirit one cold snack a day.
Ask yourself right now: What do I feed more? My flesh or my Spirit? Don’t lie to yourself, because that answer reveals your current spiritual condition.
You must choose what to occupy your mind with. That is why Philippians 4:8 is not just a random suggestion; it is divine strategy.
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
Putting this verse into practice is how you begin to take thoughts captive. But first, do an honest inventory. What is in your search history? What is in your feed? What conversations are you replaying that feed bitterness and anger instead of peace? Cut it off, mute it, delete it, or unfollow it. If it’s not building your Spirit, it’s feeding your flesh. Your answer identifies what must change.
Discipline three: Use Your Sword with skill and persistence
The Bible teaches us that the word of God is the sword of the Spirit.
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
It doesn’t take very long reading the Bible to realize that it is much harder to read and digest than any other book. It requires spiritual and mental effort, as well as physical stamina, to read and understand the truth it contains. The reason? The Bible is the only book that is alive. The word of God is a living sword of truth. This sword is sharper than any scalpel and can do surgery on your heart, and it can be used as a weapon to defend yourself from the enemy’s attacks. Satan fears the Saint who is skilled with the sword?
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
You have the sword in you because you have been practicing Discipline One. Faith has been building in your heart because faith comes by hearing the Word. Now we release the power of that faith by speaking that same truth.
There are three Greek words in the New Testament translated Word. For this discipline, we will focus on the word “Rhema” which means the spoken Word. It is the spoken word that releases our faith and causes the enemy to flee. We see Jesus doing this very thing when He was tempted in the wilderness. Three times He spoke to the devil, “It is written.” He wielded the sword by speaking the Word, and the enemy left because he knew that if he kept pushing, he was going to be whacked again. (Matthew4, Luke 4)
Notice that Satan didn’t come until Jesus was close to His breakthrough. He waited until His flesh was weak and exhausted from fasting 40 days. Then He gave Jesus the business. He does the same thing to us. If this is the way Jesus fought the enemy’s attacks on His mind, then we need to follow His example.
Luke 6:40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.
Are you His disciple? Then you should follow His example. If you try to do it any other way, you are putting yourself and your opinion above Jesus. He is the way, the truth, and the life. It is only by the spoken Word that kingdom authority is exercised and faith is released. Speaking God’s word is the number one action that demonstrates faith.
Mark 11:22-24 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. 23 For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
It isn’t just speaking it that makes things change and makes the enemy flee. You must believe it. This is why it is important to feed constantly on God’s word until it becomes a part of you.
Romans 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
It is important to practice wielding the sword daily, not just wait until you are attacked. Faith comes by hearing the Word, and the best way for you to hear it is for it to come from your mouth.
Develop the Discipline of speaking and praying God’s Word every day. Make His Word a prayer of declaration and agreement with what God has spoken about you and your situation. Here are some examples that I use with scripture references that you can use. This will give you an idea of how to find and build your own: Pray these out loud and make them personal. Meditate on what you are praying. Think about what the Word says about you and add to this prayer to suit your specific circumstances.
Joshua 1:8, John 1:14, James 1:21: Father, your word will not depart from my mouth, but I will meditate on your word day and night, that I may see it with my heart, believe in my heart, and obey every command written in it. When I speak your word and meditate on your word, Lord, I become your word. Your word is engrafted into my heart. Your word is becoming a physical, mental, and spiritual reality in my life. I make my way prosperous, and I have good success because I am committed to your word.
Mark 11:23, Proverbs 18:20-21 Father, because of the creative power and authority that You have given me, I speak to things and situations, and they obey me. I believe in my heart that the things I say will be done. My words have tremendous authority and power. Death and life are in the power of my tongue. I steward this power wisely in the fear of the Lord. I use this power to change situations, to help people, to strengthen, establish, and clarify my hope and my vision, and to demonstrate the power of the kingdom of God and the power of the gospel. Thank you for giving me the authority to speak on your behalf. I don’t take this responsibility lightly. I use this authority to bring You glory in the fear and reverence of Your great name.
Proverbs 21:23, Psalm 141:3, James 1:26, Ephesians 4:29, Psalm 39:1, Psalm 12:6, Ephesians 4:15. I guard my mouth by bridling my tongue. I force my tongue to be my servant, and I keep my soul from trouble. Father, I set a watch at the door of my lips, and I allow no corrupt communication and no ungodly words to come out of my mouth, but I only speak what is good for necessary edification, that it may minister life and impart grace to me and all those who would hear me. I guard my heart diligently, so I don’t sin with my tongue; Your Word is pure, and I am committed to speaking, believing, and becoming your Word. I speak your truth in love, and I grow up into Christ, the head of the Church, in all things.
Philippians 4:6-9 I refuse to worry, fret, or get anxious over anything, but in everything through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, I make my requests known to you, Father, and your peace that surpasses all understanding goes before me, preparing my way, keeping and guarding my heart and mind through Christ Jesus. Lord, I purposely think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. If there is any virtue or praise, I think about these things. I protect my imagination. I guard my heart and mind against all doubt, and all negative and faithless thoughts. I am obedient to your Word, Lord, and your peace abides with me.
Now that you are familiar with the three disciplines, here is a plan for putting them into action:
A Practical Battle Plan
Read Scripture constantly. Treat the Word of God as your necessary, daily spiritual food. Engage with God’s Word and stay engaged. Think about it, meditate on it, speak it aloud, engage your imagination with it, and develop a love for truth.
Pray often: When you read the Word, talk to God about it, turn it into a conversation, ask Him questions, and expect Him to answer. Maintaining open communication with God keeps you aware of His presence and helps you resist temptations when they come.
Fellowship with other believers: You can’t win this war without God’s help, and that means you need the body of Christ as well to sharpen and perfect your faith.
Exercise your faith: Confront trials and challenges by applying spiritual truths. “It is written!” Faith grows much like a muscle grows and gains strength by constant use.
Practice obedience: Act on what you learn rather than just listening. Obedience is the greatest expression of faith. Disobedience is the greatest expression of doubt and unbelief. Learn to obey quickly. Delayed obedience is disguised disobedience. Every day you delay, your flesh gets one more day to dig in its roots and get established.
The consequences of delay are not theoretical. Saul lost his kingdom over delayed obedience. He did most of what God said, but not all of it and not right away. “Most” and “eventually” are the language of the devil. Quick obedience starves the flesh of time. And time is one of the devil’s favorite weapons to use against you.
Let’s get real. Maybe you’re reading this thinking, “I know all this already.” Knowing is not the problem. Doing is the problem.
The difference is action. You can have a Bible full of highlights and still live a life marked by defeat. Knowledge without action only makes you a well-informed prisoner. So act on what you know: feed your Spirit, deny yourself daily, guard your heart, speak the Word, obey quickly, and depend on the Spirit. You do not have to perfect this today, but you do have to begin today.
The devil is not waiting for a convenient time to attack, and your Spirit will not grow while you keep making excuses. The war is real. The stakes are high. God has already given you everything you need to stand and win. The only question left is this: Will you fight?
