Mark 9:23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
When Jesus said, “Nothing shall be impossible, the reality is that Jesus was speaking to His disciples who were not yet born again. When a Christian reads that text now, Jesus is literally speaking to a new species of being.
Your New Identity in Christ
2 Corinthians 5:16-17 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
When you are born again, your spirit instantly becomes a new creature that never existed before that very moment. However, your mind, emotions, and thought patterns didn’t change. Your spirit was recreated, but your soul is still corrupt. That’s where your faith comes into play. Because renewing your mind takes work, persistence, and a constant intake of spiritual nourishment from God’s Word. It is this process that solidifies your identity in Christ and trains you for a supernatural life.
You are not a mere human being trying to get God to do the supernatural. If you are born again, you are a supernatural being. You carry the very life and nature of God within you. You have the same power that raised Christ from the dead dwelling inside you. How can that be, you may ask? Look at Romans 8.
Romans 8:10-11 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
That is a huge change in the life of every Christian, and unfortunately, few actually try to adjust to this new way of thinking. It requires a renewed mind to wrap your head around your new identity and prove that it is God’s will for you to do the impossible. The renewed mind is the key.
The Renewed Mind
Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Everyone knows that nothing is impossible to God. The question is never whether God could do the impossible. The question is what happens when the life of God begins operating through a person who has been reconciled with Him. This is where many believers have misunderstood their identity in Christ. They see miracles as something that happens when God occasionally interrupts natural circumstances. But the message of the cross reveals something much deeper, much greater. God did not only come to change your destination. He came to change your source of life, change your spiritual authority, and change your very nature. He not only rescued you from sin. He brought you into a new relationship with Him. And when you understand that truth, the impossible never looks impossible again.
Impossibility is never a problem with God. It is only a problem of man not believing or not understanding his new identity that was paid for at the cross. A person who only sees themself through natural eyes will always approach life from a position of weakness and inferiority. But a person who understands what Christ accomplished at the cross will begin to operate from a different source of life, A greater source of power, a higher realm of authority, Kingdom authority.
When a person is born again, the natural, physical realm is not the highest authority and should not have the final say if that reality doesn’t line up with the promises in the New Testament. And, if your mind is not renewed to God’s Word, you will continue to live far below the life and blessings that Christ paid for you to enjoy. Unless your mind is renewed to God’s way of thinking, you will let the physical realm, your circumstances, and impossibilities dictate the direction and quality of your life.
Jesus never responded to circumstances the way ordinary people responded. When the storms appeared, He was not moved by fear. When sickness appeared, He did not accept it as final. When death appeared, He did not see it as an impossible obstacle and bow down to its authority. He operated from a higher source of power. His life is our example to follow. And the purpose of redemption was for believers to receive his life.
Abiding in the Source of Life
John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
The New Testament uses three main words for life, each with a different meaning. The word used in this passage is “zoe”. Jesus came that we may have zoe life. Specifically referring to the absolute, eternal, and divine life that comes directly from God. Jesus uses this word to describe a rich and satisfying spiritual existence offered to all believers.
This life goes way beyond physical existence. It speaks of the God kind of life. A life that comes from above. A life that is not produced by human effort, but is supernatural. A life that carries the ability of God within it.
A believer is not simply someone who has prayed a prayer to go to Heaven. The believer is someone who has received the life of God. This is why Paul could make such a powerful statement in Galatians 2:20. I am crucified with Christ. Nevertheless, I live yet not I, but Christ lives in me. Paul was describing his spiritual reality. The life operating inside him was no longer limited to human ability alone. The source of life had changed. And when the source changes, the possibilities change.
Think about a branch connected to a tree. The branch does not produce life by struggling. It receives life continually because it remains connected to the source. Jesus used this same picture in John 15.
John 15:4-8 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.
Abiding in His written Word brings you to a place in your relationship with God that produces ongoing encounters with the living Word. Jesus is the living Word. For the life of God (zoe) to flow from you, you must have that abiding connection to His thoughts and ways. There is no other way to accomplish this than through His written Word.
Not a Church service once or twice a week. Not watching your favorite preachers and teachers on YouTube. You have a responsibility to feed your heart the living water of God’s Word DAILY!
1 Peter 2:2-3 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
How many times does a baby cry out for milk in a 24-hour period? 8 to 12 times a day. Peter is telling us how to abide. He is showing us how to grow. How to renew our mind to the amazing promises of God. Take a look at Proverbs 4.
Proverbs 4:20-23 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
You carry the life of God in you, and you must renew your mind to God’s Word if you want that life to flow from your life.
Because the greatest miracle is not when a mountain moves. The greatest miracle is when the person standing before the mountain finally understands who they are in Christ.
All Christians possess something wonderful and still most fail to experience its benefits. They have access to an abundant resource and still live as though it does not exist. Believers have an amazing inheritance and most never receive it.
You can only receive what you believe. And to tell you the truth. God’s amazing promises are almost too good to be true. But they are true. He is not a man that He should lie.
You possess the finished work of Christ. But you must learn to walk in the reality of that finished work. This distinction explains why two believers can have the same Bible, the same access to God, the same promises, yet experience completely different levels of spiritual effectiveness. The difference is not God’s willingness. The difference is the renewed mind, understanding how the kingdom functions.
Jesus never taught his disciples that God’s power was unavailable. He taught them how to cooperate with it. And He will teach you too if you will allow Him that honor. He gave you the greatest textbook known to man. The living Word of God. He also gave you the greatest teacher, the Holy Spirit of Christ. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you! Resurrection power dwells in you right now if you are a Christian.
Jesus gave His disciples some clear instructions in Matthew 10, and those instructions are for you and me today.
Living the Mission of Jesus
Matthew 10:7-8 And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
God has given us this command and has also given us the power and authority to walk it out. The only way you will fulfill this command is with a renewed mind.
Take a moment and ask yourself a few questions.
Question: What identity have you been accepting that contradicts your identity in Christ?
Question: What circumstance have you allowed to shape your thinking more than Scripture?
Question: How much has my thinking changed about myself since I came to the Lord?
Question: What daily practices will help you stay connected to the source of life?
Summary
Through faith in Jesus Christ, believers receive a new identity and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Yet living from that new life requires a renewed mind; One shaped by God’s Word rather than by fear, natural limitations, or present circumstances. As believers abide in Christ, depend on the Spirit, and continually nourish their hearts with Scripture, His life produces spiritual fruit, strengthens faith, and equips them to walk in the supernatural and overcome seeming impossibilities. The call is to remain connected to Jesus, understand and trust His finished work, and grow in our faith to the point where the impossible is just another opportunity to bring Him glory.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the amazing new life You have given us through Jesus Christ. Thank You that we are no longer defined by our past, our weakness, or the limitations we see around us, but by Your grace and the finished work of Christ. Renew our minds through our encounters with Your Word. Teach us to abide in Jesus, to depend on the Holy Spirit, and to trust Your character and Your word in every circumstance.
Give us the grace and understanding to guard our hearts from pride, doubt, fear, unbelief, and wrong speaking. Give us wisdom, and help us to be sensitive to Your voice. Give us courage to obey Your leading, and compassion for the people You place before us. May the life of Christ bear fruit in our words, our choices, our relationships, and our ministry. Where our thinking has been shaped more by circumstances than by Scripture, bring us correction and set us free from deception. Where we have relied on our own strength, teach us to trust in You. Help us freely give what we have freely received, serving others with humility, love, and bold faith. May everything we do bring glory to You, declare Your Kingdom, and reveal Your goodness to the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.
