The Renewed Mind: The Key to Walking in Kingdom Authority
This lesson teaches you how to grow in the faithful use of your God-given authority and cultivate a mind continually renewed by Scripture and responsive to the Holy Spirit. A renewed mind equips you to resist fear, temptation, and spiritual opposition while remaining steadfast when healing or circumstances do not change immediately.
To walk in the fullness of your God-given authority and take dominion over sickness, demonic opposition, and worldly obstacles, maintaining a renewed mind is non-negotiable. A disciplined, renewed mind is the command center for spiritual warfare. Kingdom authority is exercised under Christ’s lordship, not as a method for controlling God, other people, or every circumstance. We speak and act in agreement with Scripture, pray with confidence, walk in obedience, and trust the outcome to God’s wisdom and timing.
Below is a daily strategic outline to renew your mind, take thoughts captive, enforce the victory of the Kingdom of God, and prove the will of God for your life.
I. The Morning: Let the power of words align your Spirit, set the tone, and set the watch.
Begin the day by immediately acknowledging God and consciously listening for the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Avoid picking up your phone or absorbing secular media.
Action: Pray in the Spirit to build up your holy faith (Jude 1:20) and activate the fruit of self-control.
Plant the Word in your heart and in your mouth before circumstances demand it.
Begin by accumulating scriptures that pertain to your identity in Christ, this should be an ongoing process.
Joshua 1:5-9 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. 6 Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Proverbs 4:20-24 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. 23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. 24 Put away from you a deceitful mouth, And put perverse lips far from you.
Proverbs 18:20-21 A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; From the produce of his lips he shall be filled. 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
II. Throughout the Day: Guard Your Heart, Examine Your Thoughts, and Respond in Faith
Guarding your heart (Filtering Input): Guard your eyes and ears diligently. What you look at and listen to directly feeds either your flesh or your spirit. The principle is simple: What you feed grows; What you starve dies.
The “Take Captive” Protocol
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ
Intercept: Identify any negative thoughts like fear, sickness, doubt, or any faithless thought the second it hits your consciousness.
Interrogate: Ask, “Does this thought align with the finished work of the Cross, and lead me toward faithful action and a redemptive solution?” Reject lies, condemnation, and hopeless conclusions. If it contradicts any promise of God that is your rightful inheritance, or if it predicts defeat or illness, it is an illegal trespasser and must be taken captive and made to submit.
Arrest and Cast Down: Verbally reject the thought. Say, “I don’t believe that. I take that thought captive. I reject it and give it no place.” Refuse to rehearse it.
Replace: Replace the thoughts with specific Scripture. If the thought is sickness, follow Jesus’ example and say: “It is written, By His stripes, I am healed” according to 1 Peter 2:24. Then open the Bible and read that verse.
1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
NOTE: Emotional Governance: Recognize that emotions are indicators, not directors. When anxiety or anger arises, execute a “pause and pivot.” Submit the emotion to the Holy Spirit and command your soul to bless the Lord (Psalm 103:1).
Your emotional state is a very clear indicator of where your faith is and can reveal what needs attention. Faith’s normal expression is happy, excited, and filled with anticipation because it believes it possesses the answer before it sees it physically. Faith never remains sad, depressed, or cast down; these are always the result of the enemy’s influence and indicate he may have a foothold. Faith always includes a measure of joy and confident expectation. Faithful people will also experience grief, fear, exhaustion, and sadness, but faith won’t allow you to dwell in these places for long. Faith is always up, or in the process of getting up.
Bring every emotion honestly before God, test the beliefs beneath those emotions with Scripture, seek wise pastoral support when needed, and choose your next response in obedience to Christ. Sickness thrives in an environment of stress, fear, prolonged grief, and bitter thoughts. The renewed mind enforces the law of the Spirit of life over mental torment, physical decay, and any other circumstance that would oppose God’s promises or contradict His redemptive work.
III. Physical Discipline: Subduing the Temple
The body must be trained to obey the spirit, not the other way around. Romans 12:1 commands us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice.
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Confession: Speak the Word over your body. Verbally declare over your body that it is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
Dominion: Confession and praying God’s Word in prayers of declaration and agreement with His Word is a vital part of exercising Dominion. The first place you must learn to take dominion is over your own soul and body.
Taking Dominion over yourself starts with complete submission to Christ.
Philippians 2:9-10 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth.
I asked the Lord one time why sickness, oppression, and obvious demonic activity were not bowing when believers (including me) used His name to exercise authority and take dominion. I’ll never forget His answer.
He said: “Jack, for you to walk in my authority and take dominion, your knee must be the first to bow.”
Your own heart and body are the training ground for taking authority and dominion. If you don’t submit to God and live by His Word, you will not walk in the power and victory God has provided in your own life. Therefore, you will not be able to heal and deliver others in His name to the degree you are called to.
You can only give away what you have already received. This is why we don’t see more demonstration of the gospel in Church today. You cannot exercise authority over external spiritual forces if you do not have authority over your own internal terrain. Your heart and mind is the battleground. Subdue that terrain first, and God will use you to heal and deliver others.
IV. The Disciplined Tongue: Your Tongue is the steering wheel of your life.
James 3:3-8 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
The Devil looks for open doors of unmanaged thoughts and words or actions of unbelief. A disciplined mind must be accompanied by a discipled mouth and a bridled tongue. Your tongue cannot be tamed, so it must be bridled.
Unexamined thoughts, unbelieving words, and disobedient actions can give temptation room to grow. A renewed mind will produce a disciplined speech. Your tongue did not get born again when you did. It is part of your physical body, which is dead because of sin, yet it is still filled with amazing creative spiritual power. Your tongue is carnal by nature, and you must force it to be holy. You have to make your tongue your slave, not allow it to be your master.
Romans 8:10–11 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
For God to give life to your physical body, you must allow the Spirit within you to govern your tongue. Your tongue will lead you straight to death and destruction if you allow it to remain unbridled.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Most of the promises of God must be taken by force. The kingdom of God within us must be subdued by force. And we have to use the creative and destructive power in our ungodly tongue to do it. The battle for dominion starts right under your nose. It is the tongue that expresses and decrees your authority and dominion. If you are double-tongued, the enemy knows it. Speak with the integrity of God’s written Word and refuse to speak anything else. Force your tongue to serve God and his purposes. This is an enormous responsibility.
V. The Evening:
Review the Day with God. Before sleep, thank God for His faithfulness, review the day without condemnation, and notice where your thoughts, words, and actions reflected Christ—or where they did not. Acknowledge any sin, and live forgiven. Record any Scripture or insight the Holy Spirit has emphasized.
In Conclusion: The Renewed Mind and Kingdom Authority
You cannot walk in the fullness of Kingdom authority while continuing to think in agreement with fear, unbelief, condemnation, sickness, or defeat. Authority may belong to you in Christ, but a renewed mind enables you to understand it, agree with it, and exercise it faithfully. As Scripture transforms your thinking, you learn to recognize the enemy’s lies, bring every thought into obedience to Christ, and respond to opposition from the position of Christ’s victory rather than from the pressure of present circumstances.
The renewed mind is therefore not optional; it is the command center of a life submitted to God. Your thoughts shape your words, your words direct your actions, and your actions reveal whether you are living from the truth of God’s Word. When your mind is governed by Scripture and your heart is yielded to the Holy Spirit, your speech becomes disciplined, your faith becomes steadfast, and your authority is expressed with confidence, wisdom, and obedience.
Make the renewal of your mind a daily priority. Begin with surrender, guard what enters your heart, reject every thought that contradicts God’s truth, and fill your mouth with His Word. Before you command anything else to bow in Jesus’ name, let your own thoughts, desires, emotions, and words bow to His lordship.
A believer whose mind is continually renewed and whose life is fully surrendered is prepared to walk in the fullness of Kingdom authority.
