Jesus Preached to those Who Died in Noah’s Flood.

The Amazing Mercy of God

Romans 4:14-17 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression. 16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did

Look at verse 15. “Where there is no law there is no transgression.” This is a powerful statement! In the New Testament, we are not under Law, therefore we cannot transgress the Law. But think of all the people who lived and died from Adam to when the Law was given through Moses. What about all those people?

Romans 5:12-19 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.) 18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

“Death reigned from Adam to Moses.” This tells us that the period between the first man, Adam, and the formal giving of the Law by Moses was marked by death. Sin was the cause of this death. This implies that sin, inherited from Adam’s transgression, resulted in death for all humanity. This included even those who did not directly violate the specific law given to Adam.

We see again that sin is not imputed where there is no law. If sin was not imputed to those who lived and died before the Law was given, where are they now? Are they in Heaven, or are they in Hell?

A legalistic mind would assume that all those in Noah’s flood went to hell. However, they were not living under the Law because it had not been given yet. So, the terrible sin that they had fallen into and were practicing would not be counted against them.

This helps us better understand why God purposely destroyed all those people. It was a mercy killing.

Think about this: Just imagine a child of yours suffering terribly. Physically, mentally, and emotionally, they were tormented with unbearable pain. This pain was only increasing. Everyone knew that a long, slow, miserable death was imminent.  Furthermore, any offspring they had would be born with the same terrible level of suffering and torment. If you had a choice to end that suffering and the suffering of generations to come, what would you do? It was God’s mercy that sent the flood. It was God’s righteous judgment.

1 Peter 4:4-6 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. 5 They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

Who is Peter referring to here? Who were the dead that the gospel was being preached to?

1 Peter 3:18-20 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

Peter makes it clear. At least some of the ones being preached to were the people destroyed in the great flood. They were in prison. Separated from God with no way back.

It is possible, even likely, that they were in Abraham’s bosom. The place of the righteous dead. But there is too little in the scripture to make that assumption. Abraham’s bosom is only mentioned once in Luke 16 when Jesus was telling the story of Lazarus and the rich man.

Luke 16:22-26 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

NOTE: In the Hebrew Scriptures, the word used to denote the realm of the dead is Sheol. It simply means “the place of the dead.” The Greek equivalent to Sheol is Hades, which is also a general reference to “the place of the dead.” Sheol/Hades seems to be divided into a place of blessing (where Lazarus was in Luke 16) and a place of torment (where the rich man was in Luke 16). Sheol also seems to be a temporary place where souls are kept as they await the final resurrection.

In the Old Testament, the souls of the righteous, at death, go directly into “Abraham’s bosom.”In the New Testament, believers in Christ go directly to Heaven. (Luke 23:432 Corinthians 5:8Philippians 1:23).

If Abraham’s bosom was a place in Hades/Sheol reserved for the righteous dead, then Jesus preached to all those before the Law and emptied that place of all those who were imprisoned and separated from God.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

As righteous as Abraham was, he still could not be fully reconciled to the Father. No one in history could come to the Father until Jesus placed His blood on the mercy seat. Even then, the living and dead still had confess with their mouths and believe with their hearts.(Romans 10:9-10)

Matthew 27:51-54 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:12

Christians Should Rethink the Sabbath Commandment.

The New Testament is very clear. In Christ, the law of the Sabbath (the fourth commandment) has found its fulfillment. With that fulfillment, the principle of the Sabbath takes on a deeper and more dynamic meaning to the believer. Our way of finding rest is very different. It does not involve setting aside one day a week to cease from our own works.

Jesus said: “I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Christ did not abolish rest; He ushered in a deeper kind of rest than taking a Sabbath could ever offer. In Jesus, something far greater than the Sabbath is here. The physical rest offered weekly in the Old Testament is now transformed and being offered daily in Christ.

Even in the Old Testament, we see that His rest was available to Israel. However, they never enjoyed it. Their unbelief prevented them from doing so.

Hebrews 3:17-19 Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

Only believers enter His true rest.

Hebrews 4:1-10 Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said: “So I swore in My wrath, They shall not enter My rest,” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For He has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works”; and again in this place: “They shall not enter My rest.”

Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said: Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. 10 For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

And how do we enter this amazing rest? We do not enter His rest by putting aside our physical labors for one day in seven. We enter by believing: “We who have believed enter that rest.”

Faith in Jesus Christ brings a daily rest for the soul so we can live supernaturally before Him and others. Without this abiding rest, we will never be equipped to accomplish all He has for us to do.

Jesus said, “the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27)

Look at what Paul said to the Church at Colossi.

Colossians 2:16-23 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God. 20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.

What Paul says here is interesting, he lumps the Sabbath together with food laws, festivals, and new moons. All of these constitute types and shadows that point to the coming of Christ. Since Christ has come, observing the Sabbath is no longer a matter of obedience or disobedience. Rather, Paul says, “Let no one pass judgment on you.”

Romans 14:5 One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind.

For the sake of Christian liberty and mutual love, Paul says simply, “Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind”

If an Old Testament Israelite esteemed “all days alike,” he could be stoned to death (Numbers 15:32–36). Yet Paul evidently felt no need to impose the Sabbath command in his New Testament writings.

So, should Christians keep the Sabbath as laid out in Old Testament Law? Emphatically, NO! However, we must labor to enter into the rest He has described to us in Hebrews 4

Under the new covenant, no Christian is bound to keep the fourth commandment. We may still decide to rest one day in seven, and there is no condemnation for those that do.

However, without regularly experiencing the type of rest laid out in Matthew 11 and Hebrews 4, it matters very little how much rest we give our bodies. Our rest will be fraught with restlessness. Our work will become a desperate attempt to secure the rest we have not yet found in Christ for ourselves.

“The devil would have us work even while we rest. But Jesus would have us rest even while we work.”

Neither the workaholic nor the lazy person has yet learned to enjoy the rest of the true New Testament Sabbath. Not so with those who have heard and heeded Jesus’s invitation to “Take my yoke upon you . . . and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29). In Christ, we live out the Sabbath every day. We cease from our own plans and agendas. We put on His yoke and carry His burdens. His yoke is easy. His burden is light.

So, here is the trap.

When we teach other believers that we must take a Sabbath, whether it be Sunday, Saturday, or any other day, we teach Old Testament Law and we become a stumbling block to those we teach. Teaching others to live by the Law in any capacity promotes legalism. It hinders them from fully embracing New Testament grace.

Legalism is the opposite of grace.

Romans 7:4-10Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Sin has the Advantage over us when we live by the Law.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death.

Apart from the Law, sin is dead. When we try to keep even one letter of the Law, we keep sin alive. It is called the Law of Sin and Death for a reason.

Romans 8:1-4 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Bottom line: If you choose to practice a weekly Sabbath as part of your worship to the Lord, I believe He honors it. Let no man judge you otherwise. But understand that in Christ there is a far greater and more important rest that you must pursue so don’t stop there. If you have been taught wrong, which is most people’s case, then make the adjustment, and labor to enter Christ’s rest. God Bless you!

Rage Baiting: Understanding the Devil’s Deception.

Social media has become a powerful platform for communication, information sharing, and social interaction. However, it has also given rise to various negative phenomena, one of which is rage baiting.

Rage baiting is a tactic used to provoke strong negative emotions in an audience with the intent of generating engagement or attention. The news media uses the same evil tactics to manipulate and elevate people’s emotions to influence political agendas and gain more votes. At least that is what the unspiritual man sees.

What is really happening?

Rage baiting is a form of demonic manipulation where individuals, groups, or political parties intentionally provoke anger or outrage in others by posting inflammatory content, such as controversial opinions, offensive statements, misleading information, and outright lies.

Satan’s goal with rage baiting is to get people, especially Christians, to make decisions based on elevated amotions instead of common sense or Biblical principles. This will ultimately lead to Christians defiling themselves by speaking and acting on these ungodly emotions. This is Satan’s Endgame.

Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

Rage baiting is a sign of the end times and a tool for multiplying his wrath on the Earth. Satan has come down to YOU, having great wrath and his favorite way to pour out his wrath is through Christians. Not ON, but THROUGH. He wants HIS wrath to pour out of YOUR life through ungodly words and actions.

Mathew 15:11 Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.”

Tactics used in Rage-Baiting

Rage baiting employs various tactics to achieve its objectives.

  • Provocative Headlines: Using sensational or misleading headlines to grab attention and provoke an immediate emotional response.
  • Controversial Topics: Posting about divisive issues, such as politics, religion, race, and gender equality to stir up strong feelings.
  • Personal Attacks: Targeting specific individuals or groups with derogatory or offensive remarks to incite anger and provoke an ungodly response.
  • Exaggeration and Hyperbole: Amplifying facts or situations to create a sense of urgency or outrage.
  • False Information: Spreading misinformation, blatant lies, and fake news to manipulate public opinion and provoke reactions.

The impact of Rage-Baiting

Rage baiting has had significant consequences for both individuals and society. It has already shaped our culture and changed the entire landscape of the political arena.

Exposure to rage baiting causes high levels of stress, anxiety, and anger. Prolonged exposure can lead to emotional exhaustion and have a negative impact on mental health. Additionally, rage baiting can, and has resulted in harassment, bullying, and murder. Still, Christians don’t typically see it and get sucked into the vortex of emotional instability and confusion.

Rage baiting contributes to the polarization of society by deepening divides between different groups. It fosters a toxic online environment where constructive dialogue is replaced by hostility and aggression. This hinders collective problem-solving and compromises the quality of public discourse. Rage baiting exploits human emotions for attention and influence.

Why are Christians easily duped into engaging in this ungodly activity? Have we strayed so far from Christlikeness that the world can’t see the difference between a Christian and someone without God in their life?

A Tree is Known by its Fruit.

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Rage-baiting stirs up the works of the flesh and bears the fruit of selfish desires.

James 3:13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Christians who respond to and engage in rage-baiting become a landing strip for demonic activity, empowering unclean spirits and giving them permission to attack their mind and influence their thinking.

Christians are expected to produce the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Make the Tree Good

Matthew 12:33 Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

Questions:

  • Have you been a victim of race-baiting?
  • Have you posted race-baiting content?
  • How many hours a day do you watch social media and the news?
  • Are you feeding continually on God’s written word, or Satan’s lies and manipulation?
  • Is your conscience clear?
  • What steps should you take to be free from Satan’s trap?
  • If Truth is what sets you free, what are lies and rage-baiting doing to you?
