The Spiritual Discipline of Guarding the Heart

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

To keep our heart means to aggressively guard it with diligence and perseverance.

The word translated “heart” in this verse is the Hebrew word “leb,” which is defined as “the soul. The seat of our will, senses, deep thought, intellect, emotions, and affections.” Of our spirit, soul, and body, our soul holds the place of ultimate authority. We must bring our hearts into submission to our born-again spirit if we are to experience the abundant life promised to us in scripture.

The problem with our heart is that it does not want to be guarded! In fact, it doesn’t even want to be regulated. It was not renewed when we were born again. Instead, we were given the Holy Spirit to lead us and comfort us as we renew our minds and grow in our transformation and submission to the Spirit.

Submission Requires Discipline.

The purpose of spiritual discipline is to renew the mind and train the soul. If the soul is full of the noise of the world, it is difficult to hear the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual disciplines align us with the thoughts and ways of God, increasing our spiritual sensitivity and guarding against the enemy’s deceptions.

Spiritual disciplines are intentional practices, like daily Bible reading, prayer, meditation on God’s word, and worship. These are done to cultivate spiritual growth and deepen our relationship with God. They are considered training exercises for leading a spirit-led life, much like physical exercises are for the health of our physical body. If guarding our hearts is not viewed as a daily spiritual discipline, we will eventually let our guard down, allowing Satan entrance into our lives.

Consider the power and significance of this scripture.

1 John 5:18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

This verse tells us that we can live in a place where the devil can’t touch us. But to do this, we must “keep ourselves.” To keep ourselves, we must guard our hearts from all darkness and the enemy’s influence.

Our heart (soul) is the part of our nature that must be renewed if we are to reach our full potential in Christ. The salvation of our spirit was an event that we can easily place a time and date on. The salvation of our souls is a process we must engage in for the rest of our lives. Guarding our hearts is what protects the process of transformation and prevents us from losing ground or hindering our spiritual growth.

Jeremiah 17:9-10The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

God describes our heart as deceitful, meaning that it is prone to lies, deception, and misrepresentation, both to ourselves and to others. He also uses the phrase “desperately wicked,” which highlights the depths of our heart’s sinfulness and the need for redemption. Only God can fully understand our heart. He knows that we are often blinded by our own immaturity and self-deception.

This verse serves as a call to humility, reminding us that we cannot rely solely on our own understanding and reasoning. We must pursue God’s guidance through His written word and the direction and influence of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence.

God is telling us that we need a transformed heart, and that only through His divine intervention and constant involvement can our hearts be cleansed and made right before Him.

The Journey of Salvation. Not Works, but Relationship

Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

The salvation of our spirit is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ, not something earned through works. This is what qualifies us for Heaven.

The salvation of our souls is the process of transformation that we are all expected to engage in through God’s written word, cooperation with the Holy Spirit, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. It is a co-laboring process of spiritual growth that develops and strengthens our relationship with God. It nurtures the relationship between Father and child. Salvation of the heart is a lifelong journey, not a singular event. And yes, this requires work and commitment. This qualifies us to experience Heaven before we get there.

What Are We Guarding Our Hearts From?

In this day and age, we must be fully clothed in the armor of God to stand a chance at overcoming all the things that Satan is throwing at us. Every demonic attack is aimed at our heart to infiltrate it with darkness. He doesn’t attack with large military weapons that cause instant mass destruction; he attacks us with seeds.

How does Satan plant his seeds of doubt and darkness into the soil of our hearts? He plants them through what we see and hear. Television, movies, social media, the “news”, magazines, podcasts, store advertisements, and even Christian programs have become saturated with evil seeds.

Here are four ways that media can exert influence over our lives and plant spiritual seeds that have a negative impact on our hearts.

1. Shaping Perceptions of Reality:

  • Heavy television viewers may perceive the real world in a way that aligns with the often-distorted fantasy they see on television.
  • Media can influence our understanding of issues by highlighting certain aspects while downplaying others. This is a demonic deception.
  • Media outlets can determine what people think about by looking at which issues receive the most attention and coverage and focus their agenda accordingly. This is demonic manipulation.

2. Influencing Beliefs and Values:

  • Media can reinforce or challenge existing social norms, potentially impacting views on gender roles, multi-genderism and trans-genderism, racism, and other aspects of social life. This is demonic confusion.
  • Exposure to specific news outlets or political commentary can shape political beliefs and voting preferences. This is demonic political manipulation.
  • Advertising and product placement can influence the desire for certain goods and services, shaping consumer behavior.

3. Employing Psychological Techniques:

  • Media often utilizes emotional appeals (fear, joy, sadness) to capture attention and influence responses.
  • Repeated exposure to messages or images can prime people to respond in certain ways.
  • Association and Symbolism: Media can create associations between products or ideas and desirable emotions or values.

4. Social Media and Algorithms:

  • Echo Chambers: Algorithms on social media platforms can reinforce existing beliefs by exposing people primarily to content that aligns with their views, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives.
  • Personalized Content: Targeted advertising and personalized recommendations can further amplify existing biases and preferences.
  • Social Comparison: Social media can encourage social comparison, leading to feelings of inadequacy and lower self-esteem. Sometimes leading to depression and even suicide.

This allows the enemy to build strongholds of wrong thinking that he can hide behind as he controls our lives. If we can’t see the enemy’s hand in all this, then he has been very successful in blinding us to truth.

We Must Not Blindly Conform To The World

The decision to guard our hearts with diligence, honor, and faithfulness will affect every other aspect of our lives in a positive way. The things that we allow our hearts to be exposed to will determine how we behave and speak.

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Monitoring what is allowed to enter our heart will give us the wisdom, discernment, and strength to guard what we allow to exit our heart. Thus, our ability to guard the boundaries of our heart will provide a framework that determines the boundaries of our lives.

If we faithfully guard our hearts, we will become the children of God that our Father desires us to be, able to navigate the difficulties of life with wisdom and dignity. not subjecting others to ungodly behaviors or volatile emotions. The legacy that we leave will affect people for generations.

Guarding our heart above all else is the catalyst for living an abundant and fulfilled life.

The Discipline of Dying: A Path to Spiritual Growth

The purpose of spiritual discipline is to renew the mind and train the soul. When the mind is full of the noise of the world, it is difficult to hear the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual disciplines align us with the thoughts and ways of God, increasing our spiritual sensitivity by tuning us into the frequency of God, which is peace.

Spiritual disciplines are intentional practices, like daily Bible reading, prayer, meditation on God’s word, and worship. These are done to cultivate spiritual growth and deepen one’s relationship with God. They are considered training exercises for spiritual life within the body of Christ, much like physical exercises are for the health of our physical body.

These are not the spiritual disciplines I am referring to. All of these disciplines are important and necessary, but we need to incorporate another crucial discipline to make them effective. The discipline of dying.

Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

I think we all understand what it means to deny oneself, but what does it mean to pick up our cross? Picking up our cross is required if we are to follow Jesus. It is important that we know what that looks like.

When Jesus carried His cross, He was carrying it to His death. Can you imagine what would be going through your mind if you had to carry this heavy cross? It was up a hill, hard to carry.  It makes it even harder knowing that you would soon be hanging from it in torturous pain, awaiting a slow and miserable death.

Jesus carried His cross to die FOR the world. We carry our cross to die TO the world.

Galatians 2:20 says, I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

This verse emphasizes that we identify with Christ’s death and resurrection, leading to a life focused on Him and His will rather than ourselves and our will.

Romans 6:5-7 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

This verse speaks of the “old self” being crucified, indicating a transformation and a new life in Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:31 I affirm, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

This verse refers to the daily process of dying to self in order to live for Christ.

Matthew 10 37-39 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

Jesus spoke repeatedly to His disciples about taking up their cross and following Him. Picking up our cross means giving up our lives—spiritually, symbolically, and even physically, if necessary. This was, and is, a prerequisite for being a follower of Christ.

Dying is never portrayed in Scripture as something optional in the Christian life. It is not a one-time event, but a daily dying, a lifelong process. It is our part in the sanctification process. God will only lead us to the cross. We must accept the responsibility to pick it up and carry it of our own free will.

The discipline of dying will be met with powerful resistance from the enemy because he has no power over one who has died to self. Daily dying will require us to avoid things that cater to resurrecting selfish desires and keeping the old man alive.

Things such as television, the news, social media, and the entertainment industry do not facilitate the quieting and sanctification of the mind and soul. On the contrary, it fills it with distractions, stirs up ungodly emotions, feeds fleshly desires, and desensitizes us to the Holy Spirit. These are some of the things that cause us to carry the burden and weight of worldly cares. They wage war against the progress we make in our personal devotions. They tear down strongholds of faith that we have built by other spiritual disciplines. They help Satan build new strongholds of wrong thinking that he hides behind to control our lives.

Satan’s distractions can skew our perspective and influence how we see our circumstances. They make things seem attractive that would not normally appeal to us. These distractions can change our desires from those that are healthy to those that are harmful. The worst part is that we will eventually influence others based upon our own deception and self-justification.

It is easy to get emotionally invested in a movie or TV series that is complete fiction. Social media can become a place where opinions fly, and words are said that hurt and tear down people. Think about the childish and ungodly way our politicians are behaving. I have seen a church split over political posturing. All these things stir us up emotionally to the point that it occupies our thoughts, initiates useless, and ungodly conversations, taking up space in our souls that God can no longer occupy.

The devil knows that constant exposure to these things makes picking up our cross virtually impossible. If the devil can gain a foothold in our minds, he has the power and authority to control our lives to some degree. We must be strategic in choosing what we look at and listen to. What we think about and speak about. Our goal is to fill our souls with the principles and truth found only in the Bible.

This is how we guard our hearts from evil influence.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

The word “heart” in this verse is the Hebrew word “leb”. It means the soul, the mind, and the will. We become vulnerable when we don’t guard our souls from the chaos of ungodly distractions.

The soul without the discipline of dying to the flesh is like a restless child, easily influenced and easily distracted. The secret is not about forcing the soul to be silent but about stewarding what it is exposed to. This is the first step in taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

It makes it very hard to take ungodly thoughts captive when we constantly engage in things that stimulate our flesh and stir our emotions.

Romans 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Until our flesh is crucified, Christ can’t live through us in fullness.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

When God is Silent

The silence of God can often be disturbing to those not living in intimacy with Him. When the Lord does not respond immediately to our prayers or does not act according to our limited, human reasoning, we can fall prey to Satan’s lies and deception.

In this time of waiting, we often give in to doubt, anxiety, impatience, and the selfish desire to resolve things on our own. God’s silence has a purpose. It teaches us to trust, to wait, and to renew our minds with his word, letting patience have its perfect work.

The renewal of the mind is about cultivating the right thoughts. To think like we have never thought before. This means filling our minds with God’s word and forcing ourselves to think on what is good, pure, and true.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things

Renewing the mind goes further than simply feeding on God’s word. It also means practicing the presence of God and maintaining an awareness of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence in our ordinary, everyday tasks. It is unlikely we will experience the peace of God daily if our mind is always distracted by worldly influence and unrenewed thinking.

Jesus is the model we must follow. His life lived is perfect theology. He was completely submitted to and aligned perfectly with the Father. He was not moved by fear, distracted by applause, overcome by the trials, nor shaken by the haters. The thing that prevents us from following His example is our lack of vigilance in guarding our minds.

To guard our minds is to guard our hearts. It is our soul that has the most influence over our heart. If our mind, will, and emotions are not sanctified, our spirit man will suffer the consequences. If our soul is in turmoil, the voice of the Holy Spirit becomes a faint whisper. Our spirit is where the rivers of God’s life flow from. When our soul is tormented and tainted by unclean thoughts, ungodly behaviors, or demonic strongholds, the rivers that flow from our heart are not pure and not fit to drink from.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

The devil needs a point of entry into our lives. We must somehow grant him permission to enter. He will usually find this point of entry in an inattentive, unguarded mind or a mind that refuses to fully submit to God. If we are disciplined to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and not allow our minds to wander aimlessly, we deny him access.

We must resist the temptation to fill our minds with empty content that promotes selfishness and spiritual laziness. Social media, fake news, television, YouTube, and the entire entertainment industry have become an extremely effective tool of the enemy to corrupt our souls and desensitize our spirits. Satan’s goal is to keep us living according to the flesh and not the Spirit.

Romans 8:13-14 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Satan is not concerned with professing Christians, but he fears the sons of God.

With the multitude of voices and the constant noise aimed at us, we must be intentional and consistent to be led by the Spirit. When God seems to be silent is when we need to be especially diligent, for this is when Satan searches to find any cracks in our armor. Our mind is not a battlefield to be taken by the enemy, it is Holy ground where Christ must reign.

Guard your mind, guard your heart. They are holy ground.

Ministering to the Lord

Do we have enough understanding of the word of God for ourselves to identify wrong teaching when we hear it, or do we let our leaders do the interpreting for us? Is our idea of studying the Bible to read everyone else’s latest book and googling all the popular beliefs on any given topic?

Even if we attend seminary and have multiple degrees, we must filter all that knowledge through our intimate relationship with the Lord. Attending Bible college does not qualify us or validate our call to minister. Without a personal relationship with the Father, we will teach doctrines of men and religious traditions filled with leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. (Matthew 16:6)

1 John 2:27 (NKJV) But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

The Bible also says, “call no man your teacher.”

Matthew 23:8-11 (NKJV) But you, do not be called ‘Rabbi’; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. 10 And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.

This is not a contradiction to Ephesians 4, where Jesus gave us teachers and the other five-fold ministry gifts to equip us. We should listen to other teachers and preachers. Still, at the same time, we must filter those teachings through our intimate relationship with the Lord, allowing the living Word to divide and discern the truth rightly. We can easily detect any error if we are sensitive to the indwelling Holy Spirit.

The result of not abiding in God’s word for ourselves is having itchy ears and becoming lukewarm in our relationship with God. If we are comfortable in our relationship with God then we are lukewarm and loving it. God gave us the Comforter for a reason. If we are abiding in Him, completely submitted to His will, there will not be a day we will not need to be comforted.

Revelation 3:16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

We should ask ourselves; How much time and effort are we investing in our relationship with the Lord? What does our relationship with God look like when no one is looking? Are we studying the Bible to know God better or learning to devise a sermon to preach to others?

Our relationship with God is our most important ministry. It is a ministry to the Lord, not to people. Ministry to people should come from the overflow of our ministry to the Lord.
