Gluttony: The Deceptive Sin Affecting Believers

Recently, I was seeking God about being completely submitted to Him. I felt like I was submitting to the best of my ability, but I sensed that something was standing in the way of my relationship with Him. So, I asked Him to search my heart and reveal to me anything that was hindering my walk with Him, and specifically anything standing in the way of the intimacy I was desiring with the Lord.

Be careful what you ask for, and be sure that you truly want answers. If you are sincere, He will give you the answers you seek.

Almost immediately, He showed me that I was in bondage to a spirit of gluttony. I knew it was true as soon as He spoke that to me. At the same time, I knew that He was going to set me free from it. I was bummed and yet relieved at the same time.

When I began to consider this new revelation and pray into it, I saw that gluttony is one of the most overlooked and accepted sins among Christians. It certainly was in my life. That being said, let’s address this sin that is a deceptive stronghold, and a killer of Christians and non-Christians alike.

Satan’s agenda.

Satan attacks us in many ways, but he always comes with the same agenda. To steal, kill, and destroy. That is his “modus operandi.” So, no matter what type of bondage he traps us in, it always has an agenda that is a product of his fallen nature. He can’t help himself; he’s a thief, a killer, and a destroyer.

Gluttony steals our health and robs us of our identity. It destroys our witness, our influence in the kingdom of God, and our ability to be holy as God is holy. It kills our confidence, our effectiveness in ministry, and eventually kills our physical bodies, sending us to an early grave. This is one of his favorite tactics to keep people from reaching their potential.

John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

I want to expose the details of Satan’s deception that many of my brothers and sisters in Christ have fallen prey to. Writing about this and helping others is a part of the process on my road to freedom from gluttony. My hope is that this teaching will help equip believers with the understanding and the tools to fight against this very deceptive spiritual attack.

Don’t be deceived into thinking that gluttony or overeating is only an insignificant vice. It is a spiritual attack on our identity and our divine purpose. There is a demonic spirit behind it, and this sin has far-reaching ramifications.

Proverbs 23:19-21 Hear, my son, and be wise; And guide your heart in the way. 20 Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat; 21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.

Interestingly, gluttony is mentioned in the same breath as a drunkard. The modern-day term for a drunkard is an alcoholic. It is easy for us to see the devastating effects of alcoholism on our society. The broken families, the financial ruin, incarcerations, and the senseless loss of lives from drunk drivers and other bad decisions made while drunk. Yet, for some reason, we don’t view gluttony in the same light. But according to the above scripture, God does.

Gluttony does not impair our ability to think clearly. We don’t go to jail for over-eating and driving. However, we do risk others’ lives when we are gluttonous and operate a motor vehicle. Gluttony can lead to heart attacks or strokes that can kill just as easily as a drunk driver.

The worst part is that it affects our relationship with the Lord. It does impact others’ lives, and it disqualifies us from some of the greatest promises available to us as believers.

Our lack of understanding has allowed Satan to blind us to the sin of gluttony. Past the point of avoidance and into acceptance. Our worldly thinking has categorized this sin as small and unimportant. However, there is no such thing as a small sin; they all produce darkness and separation from God. They erode our confidence and weaken our faith.

Truthfully, we don’t even acknowledge gluttony as a sin in our lives, therefore, we never repent of it. We just admit we are overweight and say, “Pray for me, I’m working on it.” We try to diet and exercise to solve the problem on our own. We fall victim to guilt, condemnation, and shame when it doesn’t work and we repeatedly return to old eating habits. It causes us to think less of ourselves than what God thinks about us. All the while, we are taking medications for high cholesterol and heart disease. We have chronic pain and deteriorating joints, and a multitude of debilitating diseases and ailments.

There is a multi-billion-dollar industry built around our bondage to gluttony. It seems that every week, we see a new fad diet or “magic pill” that promises results, enticing people to jump on the bandwagon and try the newest “miracle” craze. We want a solution that makes us lose weight while allowing us to continue in our gluttonous lifestyle.

If we remain bound to gluttony, our quality of life soon becomes a shadow of what God intended. Our impact on the kingdom of God is severely diminished, and it will eventually cause us to die at an early age. Satan has deceived us into accepting it and just learning to live with it. He has flown gluttony in, under our radar, and built one of the most deceptive and devastating strongholds in the Church.

The harm that gluttony causes others.

The Bible says, “a little leaven leavens the whole lump”. This is found in Galatians 5:9 and 1 Corinthians 5:6. It means that any seemingly small sin, false teaching, or wrong believing can have a far-reaching and destructive effect on an individual or a group of people.

Gluttony doesn’t just affect you, but also your entire circle of influence. Your family, your friends, your colleagues, and the fellowship of believers you are joined to.

Any time a believer is bound by some level of demonic deception, their spiritual growth and progress is hindered, and their gifts and graces are suppressed. When the Spirit of God moves through a dirty vessel, it is filtered and flavored with the sin and impurity of that vessel. It doesn’t represent Christ very well.

Have you ever taken a drink from a cheap bottle of water that tastes like the plastic it is stored in? Or maybe you drank water from a well that tastes like sulfur and smells like rotten eggs? You can’t even enjoy the water because you are so distracted by the off-putting flavor and smell. Because of the offensive flavor, you drink very little and try to find something else to drink. It is the same principle. Most blessings from God come through other people, and we receive those blessings more easily when they come through a pure vessel.

Gluttony is a sin that rarely gets addressed. Despite it being explicitly pointed out as sin in scripture, we have turned a blind eye and don’t take it seriously in our churches, ministries, in our families, and in our personal lives.

In the case of gluttony. We don’t realize that we are holding back a part of us that is extremely important to the Lord. His temple. I was heartbroken when He showed me I was guilty of this. Although I made changes in my diet, eliminating almost all sugar and starches, and eating way less processed foods, I was still eating far more than what my body needed to be healthy. I was filling God’s temple with things that He never approved of. Even good food will kill you if you don’t eat in moderation and exercise self-control.

Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It is God’s empowerment by the Holy Spirit to resist temptations, suppress fleshly desires, and make choices aligned with God’s will. Without the Holy Spirit’s help, we are powerless to overcome the bondage of gluttony.

Let’s be clear: You don’t have to be overweight to be a glutton. Anyone can be bound by gluttony. I know people who exercise constantly just so they can eat and drink anything they want and not gain weight. They justify their fleshly impulses by physically working hard to avoid being fat. Bulimia is a manifestation of gluttony where a person binges on food and then makes themselves vomit to keep from gaining weight.

Gluttony can manifest itself in any addiction to food. How about coffee, soda, or even diet soda? Any food addiction is a manifestation of the spirit of gluttony. When we experience a lack of self-control where food is concerned, it should raise some red flags. When our desire for food controls our behavior in any way, it has more power over us than it should.

I used to drink a whole pot of coffee every day. Sometimes more. I loved coffee! Then one day, as I was praying and repeatedly declaring, “God, I trust You,” the Lord spoke to me and asked, “Do you trust me with your health, Jack?” I immediately said, “Yes, Lord!” He said clearly, “Then stop drinking coffee.” That was four years ago, and I haven’t had coffee since. When God puts His finger on an issue and we cooperate with Him, He empowers us with grace to obey.

Our Body? NO! God’s Temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

We have been purchased by the precious blood of Christ. We are no longer owners and masters of our spirit, soul, and bodies. We are to relinquish our right to govern and submit completely to His will. Many believers are completely blind to this truth. They make their own decisions and continue to rule and reign over their own lives.

The things we sacrifice for gluttony.

God has given us the “earnest” of the Spirit at salvation.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

As if having the down payment of the Holy Spirit wasn’t enough, we see maybe the greatest promise in the Bible found in John 14. Jesus emphasized obedience to His word three times in this passage. His final comment is staggering,

John 14:15-18If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

John 14:22-24 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

In John 14 we see that the way we show our love for God is by obedience to His word. We not only have the promise of the Holy Spirit, but in addition to that, we see that through obedience to God, we can have the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit making their home in us. We have the promise of Jesus manifesting Himself to us and the Trinity abiding in us.

In 1st John, we see that by obeying God, we show love for our brethren.

1 John 5:2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments.

So, catch this:

1 Peter 1:15-16 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

God is Holy.

1 John 4:8 “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

God is Love.

If God is Holy, and God is Love, then Love is Holy!

Have you ever considered that? Our love for God is expressed by our obedience to His word. Our love for people is expressed first, by obedience to His word, and then our behavior toward others as described in 1st Corinthians 13;4-8

Satan does not want us to express our love for God because this will inevitably produce holiness in our lives. So, he tricks us into being disobedient through the sin of gluttony. Obedience is God’s “love language.”

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

If we present our bodies as a living sacrifice daily in prayer, holy and acceptable to God, we will find the grace to obey and a built-in accountability to help us get free and stay free from gluttony.

Anyone who sincerely loves God will not willfully disobey Him. If we find ourselves struggling to obey and losing the battle, that tells us that our heart is pure, but something is fighting against our desire to obey Him. This is spiritual warfare.

Taking the first step toward freedom.

We can’t fix this on our own. We need God’s help. The good news is, He is ready, willing, and more than able to get the job done. However, we must cooperate. It starts with acknowledging that we are living in willful sin and willful disobedience. We must repent for it and begin applying faith for our deliverance.

Freedom won’t happen overnight. If you don’t think Satan will fight us on this, you are sadly mistaken. He won’t give up a stronghold, which is his fortified position, without a fight. So be warned; once you make a decision to break free from the chains of gluttony, he will throw every temptation at you that he can think of to keep you snared. Spiritual warfare ain’t no joke, so be prepared to make a change. Specifically, your commitment to God’s word.

Oh, thank God for the truth and power of His word!

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Freedom is as simple as repenting and committing yourself to abiding in God’s word until truth sets you free. “But what about the stronghold that must be torn down?” I am glad you asked.

Jeremiah 23:29 “Is not My word like a fire?” says the Lord, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Once we repent and ask for God’s involvement, all we must do is keep it before Him in prayer, thanking Him for our freedom, expecting results, and remain committed to His word.

We have an enemy. He has an agenda. He hates us and is continually trying to kill us. The deception of gluttony is a slow and miserable death that Satan glories in. He kills us to hurt our Father.

We know from the Old Testament that God is very particular about His temple. Shouldn’t we be also? I don’t know about you, but I am no longer going to be used by Satan to hurt myself, God, or the people He has placed in my life. How about you?

Satan is After Our Identity

Spiritually speaking, we are in a war, but what are we fighting for? Who and what are we fighting against? Where do the battles take place when fighting this war? These are questions we all must answer for ourselves if we are to have any chance of victory.

First of all, people are not our enemy. I know it can seem so at times. People will inevitably come against us, but they are being motivated and used by spiritual beings and forces that can’t normally be seen with the human eye. Our battle is spiritual. Spiritual warfare is not a conflict between men but warfare against a spiritual realm that relentlessly influences the thoughts and values of mankind. There are unseen spiritual beings and spiritual forces on Earth that are determined to persuade men to think and believe anything other than the truth.

Satan and all of the evil spirits that are under his control fight against people to prevent them from accepting Jesus as their savior and Lord. If he loses that battle, he then shifts his focus to fighting against the discovery of who we are in Christ Jesus. He attacks our identity. Our mind is where the battles take place, and our souls (mind, will, and emotions) are Satan’s target.

He can’t gain governance of our souls in a fair fight, and he knows it. He has already been defeated. So, he must use deception, distractions, and subtle manipulation to trick us into handing over our souls willingly. History tells us that he has been very successful in this tactic.

We mature as Christians only to the level that our identity is understood and our souls are sanctified. Satan works overtime to prevent that from happening. Our soul is his ultimate target because the condition of our soul determines the source of our identity.

If the devil can shake us in our faith, he can make us question and even doubt our identity. He tries to keep us at a certain level of immaturity to prevent us from ever discovering who we are in Christ. It requires a developed faith to maintain our identity. However, even mature Saints can be deceived into letting go of their convictions and dropping their shield of faith. When faith is weak, our strength is small.

Proverbs 24:10 If you faint in the day of adversity, Your strength is small.

Faith is not a tool for us to get our needs met, our bodies healed, our bank accounts full, or bail us out of trouble. Faith is a perspective. It is a very narrow way of seeing, thinking, believing, behaving, and speaking. It is impossible to please God without this perspective.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Our primary call, once we are born again, is to be renewed in our minds and sanctified in our souls. Our spiritual growth and progress depend on our soul’s sanctification. We are triune beings created in the image of God. We are a spirit. We have a soul, and we dwell in a physical body. The soul (mind, will, and emotions) is the seat of authority in our three-part being. It makes up our personality and is the seat of our God given sovereignty. Our ability to say”NO’ to the One who created us proves that we are sovereign.

Man was designed by God to be completely governed by the spirit, not the soul. When man ate of the tree, sin entered the world, and man then became governed by his soul. God gives us the Holy Spirit at the new birth, re-creating our fallen spirits, so that when we submit our souls completely, we can return to His original design. The soul always has, and will always have, the final say over our spirit and body. This is why we must cast the crown of our sovereignty at God’s feet and say, “not my will, but yours be done.” As our soul goes, so does our walk with Christ.

The Holy Spirit will not force or coerce us into submission. He will patiently wait until we choose to submit our souls willingly. This does not happen at a single point in time but must be surrendered daily.

Without a sanctified and submitted soul, we will never fully understand our true identity and will not be able to fulfill all that God has called us to do and become. This is why our spiritual growth and progress must be our top priority.

The sanctification of our soul is not simply an academic process where we study and acquire knowledge. Sanctification is about transformation, and this is a lifelong pursuit. Sanctification isq pursued in the confines of communion and intimacy with the Father. Intimacy is the greatest catalyst for discovering our identity and facilitating our transformation. Satan hates it when we discover that we can have intimacy with God. He fears it, he hates it, and he will send every distraction available to keep us from intimacy with our Father.

Think of the impact of having a soul completely submitted to the voice and direction of the Holy Spirit. A soul living in constant communion and awareness of God’s indwelling presence. At this point, the soul will cease to be only a battlefield and become fertile ground where divine thoughts and supernatural creativity can flourish. A place where obedience becomes our joy, and rivers of living water pour forth from us and impact the world around us for God’s glory.

This will not happen without severe resistance. We will still experience conflict and confrontation. Even the most dedicated Saints will face times when old thoughts try to infiltrate as Satan tries to reclaim space in our soul.

Old thought patterns and memories can have roots that are entangled with the enemy’s lies. These are the strongholds that 2 Corinthians speaks of.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

The issue is not just recognizing these thoughts for what they are, but knowing what to do with them when they come. Make no mistake, they are coming! When a contrary thought resists the Holy Spirit, we quickly realize that we can’t fight it in our own strength, nor can we ignore it until it goes away. We need to remember that the weapons of our warfare are spiritual. We cannot win this battle with willpower, human strategies, or worldly philosophy.

The enemy’s weapons are lies and deception. Our weapons are truth and righteousness.

So, let’s break this statement down from the book of Ephesians.

Ephesians 6:10-17 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

If you notice, the truth is to be girded about our loins. Why does it use the analogy of loins instead of the mind? Because the loins contain the reproductive organs. Words and thoughts are seeds. Our minds are the soil where thoughts take root and reproduce after their kind.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

We must not sit by passively and allow Satan to sow seeds of doubt and unbelief in our minds. If we do, we will soon water and fertilize those thoughts by meditating on them and speaking about them. When we give voice to Satan’s evil thoughts, we reveal that we have accepted them, showing him our weakness. He then proceeds to water and cultivate those with more thoughts, eventually building a stronghold he can hide behind and wage war against our souls.

1 Peter 1:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

Whatever gets planted in our minds has the ability to reproduce if we feed and water it with similar thoughts. This is why we must have constant exposure to the written word. God’s thoughts and ideas can choke out and destroy evil thoughts and tear down enemy strongholds.

1 Peter 2:1-2 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

Concerning the breastplate of righteousness, understand that it has two parts of equal importance. Without both parts, our breastplate has cracks and holes in it where the devil can gain access. The two parts of the breastplate of righteousness are faith and love.

1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

We know from the scriptures that faith works by love. We also know that by faith we are accounted as righteous.

Galatians 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

Romans 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

If our breastplate is lacking in love, not only does our breastplate have holes in it, but our shield of faith becomes ineffective against quenching the enemy’s fiery darts.

You can see how our spiritual armor is all tied together and interdependent. It is important that we have constant exposure to the truth of scripture and are diligent to meditate on it, internalize it, and allow the word of God to become a filter through which all thoughts must pass. This will require discipline, perseverance, and above all humility.

Satan even attacked Jesus’ identity in the wilderness, trying to infiltrate his thoughts, offering shortcuts and false promises, saying, “If you are the son of God….”

Matthew 4:3-11 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” 5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Satan is still attacking Jesus in this way by attacking His body. We are His body! And just like the head, we must have the correct answers to fight off every demonic attack.

Let’s follow the Lord’s example and respond to every demonic attack with the word of God, spoken from a place of intimacy with the Father, not just acquired knowledge and memorization. If God’s word is alive in us, we will be well equipped to fight against every evil thought, tear down every stronghold, and dispel all darkness.

When God is Silent

The silence of God can often be disturbing to those not living in intimacy with Him. When the Lord does not respond immediately to our prayers or does not act according to our limited, human reasoning, we can fall prey to Satan’s lies and deception.

In this time of waiting, we often give in to doubt, anxiety, impatience, and the selfish desire to resolve things on our own. God’s silence has a purpose. It teaches us to trust, to wait, and to renew our minds with his word, letting patience have its perfect work.

The renewal of the mind is about cultivating the right thoughts. To think like we have never thought before. This means filling our minds with God’s word and forcing ourselves to think on what is good, pure, and true.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things

Renewing the mind goes further than simply feeding on God’s word. It also means practicing the presence of God and maintaining an awareness of the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence in our ordinary, everyday tasks. It is unlikely we will experience the peace of God daily if our mind is always distracted by worldly influence and unrenewed thinking.

Jesus is the model we must follow. His life lived is perfect theology. He was completely submitted to and aligned perfectly with the Father. He was not moved by fear, distracted by applause, overcome by the trials, nor shaken by the haters. The thing that prevents us from following His example is our lack of vigilance in guarding our minds.

To guard our minds is to guard our hearts. It is our soul that has the most influence over our heart. If our mind, will, and emotions are not sanctified, our spirit man will suffer the consequences. If our soul is in turmoil, the voice of the Holy Spirit becomes a faint whisper. Our spirit is where the rivers of God’s life flow from. When our soul is tormented and tainted by unclean thoughts, ungodly behaviors, or demonic strongholds, the rivers that flow from our heart are not pure and not fit to drink from.

Proverbs 4:23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

The devil needs a point of entry into our lives. We must somehow grant him permission to enter. He will usually find this point of entry in an inattentive, unguarded mind or a mind that refuses to fully submit to God. If we are disciplined to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and not allow our minds to wander aimlessly, we deny him access.

We must resist the temptation to fill our minds with empty content that promotes selfishness and spiritual laziness. Social media, fake news, television, YouTube, and the entire entertainment industry have become an extremely effective tool of the enemy to corrupt our souls and desensitize our spirits. Satan’s goal is to keep us living according to the flesh and not the Spirit.

Romans 8:13-14 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Satan is not concerned with professing Christians, but he fears the sons of God.

With the multitude of voices and the constant noise aimed at us, we must be intentional and consistent to be led by the Spirit. When God seems to be silent is when we need to be especially diligent, for this is when Satan searches to find any cracks in our armor. Our mind is not a battlefield to be taken by the enemy, it is Holy ground where Christ must reign.

Guard your mind, guard your heart. They are holy ground.

The Truth about Strongholds

In today’s world, our minds are constantly being bombarded by ungodly influences. Social media, rage-baiting news, the entertainment industry, political upheaval, lofty opinions, and twisted ideologies. These forms of attack create a constant noise designed by the enemy to capture our attention, manipulate our choices, and subtly enslave our hearts.

We must recognize that our minds are not passive in this onslaught of external influences. The mind is all the while absorbing, analyzing, filtering, and creating thoughts that can war against our transformation and subvert the process of renewing our minds.

As born-again believers, our minds should be sanctified altars for the glory of God. Instead, because of this constant noise, it often remains a stronghold where old thought patterns and temptations are resurrected and insist on residing. I would dare say that most of the Church doesn’t recognize this as spiritual warfare.

The Apostle Paul said it best:

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ

The problem we must all face is the strongholds created within our minds where thoughts and arguments that are contrary to God’s truth find a place to take root, to lay a foundation. This is Satan’s deception in its most devious form. Strongholds do not get built with great fanfare and demonstration. They come in stealthily, disguised as harmless ideas, familiar voices, and half-truths, stacking one upon another until a foundation is laid. Once a stronghold is finally built, the enemy now has a fortress to hide behind and manipulate us in secret to do his will.

This elaborate deception has one purpose. One goal. To prevent us from renewing our minds to the word of God and becoming the people He created us to be. Fully redeemed, mature sons.

Many Christians live as prisoners of fear and anxieties entrenched in their thoughts. Their emotions are being manipulated, drawn away from God by selfish desires and lustful thoughts, keeping sin alive by legalistic thinking and having their conscience seared as with a hot iron to numb them and desensitize them to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Satan does not need to shout while hiding behind a stronghold; a whisper in the mind is more than enough. Satan can’t read our minds, but he can put thoughts and ideas there. These are the bricks and mortar that strongholds are built from.

We are not immune to this deception no matter how much our hearts lean towards God. We all have a soul that was born into Adam. The soul (our mind, will, and emotions) was not sanctified at the new birth, only our Spirit. Our mind is the battlefield, and our soul and body are Satan’s target. They are his ultimate trophy.

He can’t obtain this prize in a fair fight, and he knows it. He has already been defeated. So, he must use deception, distraction, and subtle manipulation to trick us into handing over our souls willingly. History tells us that he has been very successful in this tactic.

He tries to keep our minds in a disordered and confused mess where the seeds of darkness and doubt can be planted, take root, and eventually bear his rotten fruit. We must fight to have our minds transformed and renewed by the word of God.

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Transforming the mind is not a single event. It must become a spiritual discipline, a lifestyle, a constant battle against spiritual forces and spiritual beings warring against the process of our transformation. We can’t be dependent on others to fight this battle for us. We are responsible for working out the salvation of our souls. We have the Holy Spirit’s help, but He will not do it for us. We must partner with God by feeding on His word so that the Holy Spirit has something to work with.

It’s not enough just to listen to sermons, memorize verses, and read books about the Bible. We must engage God’s word for ourselves.

Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

We must treat our every thought like the TSA agents checking people before they board an airplane. Check them out thoroughly and determine their origin. Does this thought come from God, from the flesh, or from the enemy? What does this thought carry with it? We need to ask ourselves, does this thought edify and produce life? Or is it feeding strongholds within us? Is it hiding behind unresolved hurts, emotional traumas, or grudges that have been nurtured or even legitimized?

Does this thought ultimately compete with God’s will? Every thought that rises against the knowledge of Christ is like a brick in a stronghold. If it is not taken captive or torn down, it joins with other bricks, creating walls that hinder our spiritual growth.

Remember that the devil always works with lies, but he needs a point of entry, and he will find this point in an inattentive mind full of Earthly concerns or in a mind that refuses to fully submit to God. So be alert! Be diligent! Be aware that you are in a battle and the enemy doesn’t fight fair.

1 Peter 5:8-9 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
