Review: Of Thomas Nelson NKJV Premier Collection Bible

This is a review of the NKJV Personal Size, Large Print, End-of-Verse Reference Bible with premium Goatskin Leather printed by Thomas Nelson Publishing.

I received this Bible for free as a member of the Bible Gateway Blogger Grid, in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Thank you, Bible Gateway, for the opportunity and the Bible.

First impressions: 10 of 10

From the packaging to the cover, and overall feel of the Bible, I was impressed. It came in a strong, thick box to protect the Bible. That was obviously needed because when I received the Bible, the box had a dent in the upper right corner, but the Bible was unharmed. The wrapping inside the box was a nice touch as well. You feel like you are opening something of real value.

Cover: 10 of 10

Having two other leather-covered Bibles that I personally had done at no small charge, I immediately noticed how soft and supple the goatskin leather was. My other Bibles are of cowhide. One is much stiffer, not laying open and flat for easy reading, and the other is not finished nearly as well as the Premier Collection Goatskin cover. The Smyth-sewn, edge-lined construction and the raised spine hubs are marks of high-quality construction and add a nice touch to the overall feel of the Bible.

Paper: 9 of 10

Because I like to highlight and write in my Bibles, as many do, I am very particular about the paper used. I don’t like bleed-through, being able to see highlights and writing from the other side of the page. It is almost impossible to find a Bible with pages that completely eliminate this, but some Bibles are far better than others. This Bible is one of them.

I am not sure what Premium European Bible paper is, but I like it. It is thin but not transparent. It minimizes bleed-through as well as any quality Bible I have seen. The only Bibles I have ever seen that prevent bleed-through are cheap Bibles with thick, cheap, easy-to-tear paper. My hope is that one day someone will invent a strong thin paper with zero bleed-through and zero transparency.

That being said, this Bible has the best paper available in my opinion.

Comfort Print typeface: 9 of 10

I love large print because I read constantly. Although I would not consider 10.5 font size to be large print, it is comfortable to read and minimizes eye strain.

Words of Christ in red are always preferred and come standard with this Bible.

Size and Feel: 10 of 10

The perfect size for travel to and from Church. I will easily fit into most purses and is not too bulky or heavy. For me personally, it is the perfect size.

Cross References: 10 of 10

I am a real stickler for overdone study Bibles. I have many. I truly believe that the best study Bibles have little or no commentary and only cross-references to similar scriptures that reaffirm what you are reading. The cross-references are easily found at the end of the verse, not at the bottom or center of the page making referencing quicker and easier to find. Nice concordance in the back as well. Absolutely perfect.

Maps: 10 of 10

The maps are beautiful, in the back of the Bible, and are brightly colored and easy to read.

Overall Design and Construction: 10 of 10

A lot of thought went into putting this Bible together. Its quality is outstanding and is not overdone with meaningless “fluff.” This is perfect for serious Bible students as well as the casual reader. Many nice touches from the packaging, the goatskin cover, the gilded pages, and the extra silk ribbons make this Bible special. It is a home run.

Overall Impression: 10 of 10

This is a Legacy Bible. Something you may want to pass on to your children. It was obviously designed for those who have high standards and a love for reading the Bible. The Quality and design lend themselves to constant personal use as well as professional clergy. I love this Bible!

Overall Review: 9.8 of 10

The highest score I have ever given on any Bible review. Outstanding!

Bible Review: Evangelical Study Bible

First, I sincerely thank BibleGateway for sending me this Bible for free in exchange for an honest review. As a Blogger Grid partner, I frequently have the opportunity to review Bibles and other works related to the Bible. Again, thank you.

My first impression of the Bible was the high quality of the book jacket/dust wrapper and the hardback cover. They are identical. Many hardcover Bibles have an elaborate book jacket while the actual hardcover is plain. I appreciate the extra effort.

The second thing that stood out was the size and weight of the Bible. It is thick and heavy. There is a ton of content in this Bible. This is great for at-home/office study or reading, but not a Bible I would want to carry to Church or a Bible study. Size is an important consideration for many people.

Upon opening the Bible to review its content, the high quality stood out again. This is no surprise because I have found that Thomas Nelson Publishing and its partners have the highest standards in everything they publish.

This is a full-color Bible with the words of Christ in red. The center column reference, the Doctrinal footnotes, Personality profiles, Archeological sites, and Apologetics articles are all color-coded to help the reader easily identify and navigate the study tools provided. The print size is 10.5 on the Bible text which makes it easy to read. The accompanying notes and center column reference are of a smaller print.

We all have preferences when it comes to our Bibles. I try to put my personal preferences aside and focus on the practicality of the study Bible itself and how it will be used by the consumer. After over a week of review, I have found things that I really like and some that may be a concern to certain people. I will rate each point on a scale of 1 to 10.

  1. Quality: 10 of 10 The overall quality of the cover and content is outstanding.
  • Practical use: 9 of 10 This is a great Bible for in-depth study, but not a Bible that I would want to tote around all the time.
  • Page weight: 9 of 10 The pages are of a lighter weight, and while sturdy enough, if you are a person that likes to mark your Bible with pens and highlighters, even the no-bleed highlighters will show through to the other side.
  • Format: 10 of 10 The way this Bible is laid out makes it one of the easiest Study Bibles to navigate, especially for new Christians.
  • Study tools: 8 of 10 While the study tools are easy to navigate, it seems to be a bit overdone. The Archaeological site’s sections feel more like “filler” instead of relevant content for Bible study. While this may appeal to newer Christians and help to keep them engaged, serious Bible students will not benefit much from this type of content.
  • Color content and Images 8 of 10 Many of the images in this Bible, while sometimes interesting, are not necessary for Bible study, and seem to be another form of “filler,” adding to the unnecessary weight and bulkiness of the Bible. Two examples are below.
  • Topical Index, Maps, and Concordance: 10 of 10 These tools all measure up to the high standards preferred by serious Bible students.
  • Cost: 10 of 10 You can find this hardcover version for as low as $38.49 from FaithGateway Store, and $41.99 from their Amazon page. If you have Amazon Prime and get free shipping, the overall cost will be about the same. It is hard to believe that a study bible of this quality can be bought for this price. Other cover options are available at an extra charge.

Overall Rating for the Evangelical Study Bible: 9.4 of 10

Review of KJV Thompson® Chain-Reference® Bible

First, A big thanks to Bible Gateway for sending me this beautiful, free hardcover copy of the Thompson, Chain-Reference Bible in the King James version. As a Bible Gateway Blogger Grid member, I am excited to do this review. I have used this Bible study system for decades and have found it to be the fastest tool available for referencing specific topics in the Bible. It is as fast as the internet without commercials, ministry agendas, and marketing scams to distract you from studying. When I need to gather scriptures on any given Bible topic, this bible is my first stop. The chain reference makes Old and New Testament scriptures readily available and easy to navigate.

As a teacher and student of God’s word, I have found the Thompson® Chain-Reference® Bible a valuable study and teaching tool and I am excited to explore the revised and updated edition and give you all an honest review.

With 8000 topics and over 100,000 references organized alphabetically, and numerically, the study system is easy to use and lists scriptures from the Old and New Testament on each given topic.

The edition that I bought in the early 90s had incomplete study chains that have been revisited and updated for accuracy and consistency. Each topic is now represented in the margins to make topic reference faster and easier.

This new revised and updated version provides an introduction at the beginning of each book instead of a book analysis used in the former versions. I like this feature because the book analysis in older versions gets lost on me and is rarely used. Putting the intro/analysis at the beginning of the book better prepares the user for the content they are about to read.

In addition to the topical chain study, the Bible is full of other study tools and resources including Bible character studies, color maps, the harmony of the gospels, messianic prophecies and their fulfillment, the history of the apostles, full-color maps, and much more.

This particular hardcover copy was put together with the reader in mind, making it a valuable and enjoyable tool for study or casual reading. The comfortable 9.5 font makes it easy on the eyes. The two-color page design is inviting. The column references are big enough to make it easy to read without having to squint or wear readers.

When opened to any page, the Bible lays flat, making it easy to handle and easier to read. While there is usually enough room for notes in the reference columns, there are a dozen blank note pages in the back of the Bible for convenience. Two satin ribbon markers to save your place is the final touch on this outstanding study Bible.

Zondervan raises the bar again in their improvement on an already outstanding study Bible. Keep up the good work. You are greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Zondervan for a truly outstanding Bible and valuable study tool.

Thank you, Bible Gateway for the free review copy of the Thompson® Chain-Reference® Bible, and for equipping the world with access to God’s living word in so many translations.

Sincerely,

Jack Coley @ Truth Pressure Ministries. #BibleGatewayPartner.
