Are you Believing or Just Confessing?

Declaring God’s Word?

What does it mean to “declare” something?

Many Christians have adopted a practice of constantly making positive declarations, or “faith confessions” of God’s word as an expression of their faith. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. We don’t want to be speaking negative words or making declarations that speak against our faith. The problem with this practice is, that there is no scriptural example of anyone doing this in the Old or New Testament.

Let me give you three scriptures that Christians often use to justify this practice,

  • Hebrews 10:23 (KJV) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)

To “hold fast the profession of our faith” means that we are to be anchored, immovable, and unchangeable. Since we claim to have our hope in Jesus, we are to live out that hope by remaining faithful to Him and being obedient to His word. Holding fast to our profession, or “confession” has far more to do with our acts of obedience that demonstrate our faith than it does our confession.

If all we do is confess the word concerning His promises without obeying the word, our faith is dead.

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Confessing the word is not the same as being a doer of the word. Obedience to God’s word is the highest expression of our faith.

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Only faith expressed through works of obedience is alive. It is possible to say all the right things and never have a living faith.

  • Job 22:28 You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways.

This is another favorite scripture for confessing Christians. Again, I am not bashing people who confess God’s word, I am emphasizing that obedience to god’s word is far more important.

The word “declare” in the above verse is translated as “decree” in the KJV. This word means to divide, or cut off in the Hebrew language, not make declarations with our mouth.

King Solomon judged between two mothers who were disputing about whose baby it was. One mother’s child died in his sleep, and she stole the other mother’s child and replaced it with her dead son. When they brought this matter before the king for judgment, this is what Solomon said.

1 Kings 3:25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.

The word “divide” in this passage is the same Hebrew word “declare or decree” used in Job 22:28.

  • 1 Corinthians 4:13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,” we also believe and therefore speak,

Believing comes before speaking and believing is expressed through acts of belief, not mere words. We can’t express our faith without corresponding action. Our actions reveal our hearts, not just our words. Out of the abundance of our hearts, our mouths will speak. (Luke 6:45)

Many are speaking in the hope of believing, thinking that if they say it enough they will eventually believe it.

What we do, how we behave, and how we live out our faith in Jesus is the greatest declaration of our faith. Our lives should speak louder than our words.

Saint Francis made a powerful statement that sums up this line of thought:

“Preach the gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.”

Declarations and positive confessions are good, let’s just make sure we are declaring our faith in Christ by our love and commitment to obeying God. Our actions speak louder than our words.

How We Pray the Word!

Father, I present my body as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is my reasonable service and spiritual worship. I am NOT conformed to this world, but I am transformed by the renewing of my mind to God’s word. I do not think of myself more highly than I ought to think, but I think soberly according to the measure of faith God has dealt me. Romans 12:1-3

Father, Your word will not depart from my mouth, but I will meditate on it day and night, that I may know and obey all that is written in it. As I abide in Your word, I will make my way prosperous, and I will have good success. Joshua 1:8

I gird up the loins of my mind with the living truth of Your word. I am sober and rest my hope fully upon the grace that is mine in Christ. I am Your obedient child and I am not conformed to any former lusts. I am holy in my conduct as You are holy and I live this redeemed life in the fear of the Lord. 1 Peter 1:13-21

The Spirit of truth abides in me, guiding me into all truth and showing me things to come. John 16:13

No weapon formed against me will succeed, and every tongue speaking against me in judgment shall be condemned. This is my heritage as your servant and my righteousness is from You. Isaiah 54:17

Father, give Your people perfect knowledge of what to do in every situation and fill us with all wisdom, spiritual understanding, and the knowledge of Your will for us. Colossians 1:9

Thank You for giving us the Holy Spirit. I have received power by the Holy Spirit, and I speak with other tongues and prophesy. I am a witness for Jesus to the end of the earth. Acts 19:6, Acts 1:8

Signs and wonders follow me and in Jesus’ name I cast out devils, I speak with new tongues. If I touch or consume any deadly thing it will not hurt me. I lay hands on the sick and they recover. Mark 16:17

Thank You for giving me Kingdom authority. I speak to things and situations by faith, nothing doubting, and they obey me. I believe in my heart that the things I say will be done so I have what I say. I speak intentionally, in the fear of the Lord, because my words have power. I use that power to change situations, help people, defeat the enemy, and give You glory. When I declare and decree things, they are established to me and light shines on my ways making my path clear. Mark 11:23, Job 22:28

I guard my mouth and my tongue, I guard my heart and protect the Kingdom of God within me with all diligence, keeping my soul from trouble. Proverbs 21:23, Proverbs 4:23

Father, I thank You for forgiving all our iniquities, For healing all our diseases, for redeeming our lives from destruction, and for satisfying our mouths with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagles. Psalm 103: 2-5

Thank You for supplying all our needs according to Your riches in glory by Christ Jesus. I seek Your Kingdom first and all things that pertain to life and godliness are added to me. Philippians 4:19, Matthew 6:33, 2 Peter 1:3

I love You Father, with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Thank you for calling me according to Your purpose and giving me the privilege to be involved in Your great work. I know that Your hand is on me, and all things work together for my good. Mark 12:30, Romans 8:28

I refuse to worry or be anxious over anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving I make my requests known to You and Your peace that surpasses all understanding keeps and guards my heart and mind through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

According to Your word, I take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. I think of things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. If there is any virtue or praise, I think about these things. I am a doer of Your word, not just a hearer, and am grateful that Your peace is with me. 2 Corinthians 10:5, Philippians 4:8,9, James 1:22-25

Because I have been resurrected with Christ, I seek those things which are from above, where Christ is, sitting at Your right hand. I set my mind and my affections on things the eternal things above, not on the things of this earth. Colossians 3:1-2

Because of Your great work in me, I am established in righteousness. I am far from oppression, I do not fear, and terror shall not come near me. Isaiah 54:14

Father, I thank You that the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in me, quickening my mortal body and giving me life. Romans 8:11

I trust in You with all my heart and do not lean on my own limited understanding. I acknowledge You in all my ways, and I thank you for directing my path. Proverbs 3:5-6

I walk in the Spirit, and I do not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. I am led by the Holy Spirit, and I am not under the law. Galatians 5:16-18

Because Your great love is living in my heart, I am patient and kind. I do not envy or boast, and I am not proud. I do not dishonor others, I am not self-seeking, I am not easily angered, and I keep no record of a suffered wrong. I do not take pleasure in evil, but I rejoice in the truth. I believe the best of every person. I always protect, trust, hope, and persevere. Your love never fails me. Romans 5:5, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

I honor You Father with my possessions, and I thank You for making me overflow with material and spiritual blessings. Proverbs 3:9,10

Because of Your great work, I have received an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness to reign as a king in life by Jesus Christ. Romans 5:17

Though I may walk through many storms and great difficulties in this life, though I may even face death, I will fear no evil, for I know You are with me, Your Word and Your Spirit, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

Father, I am blessed because I walk in the fear of the Lord and delight greatly in Your commandments. My descendants will be mighty on the earth and be blessed. Wealth and riches are in my house and my righteousness endures forever. I am gracious and full of compassion. I guide my affairs with discretion. I will never be shaken. I am not afraid of evil tidings. My heart is steadfast, trusting in You Lord. Psalm 112:1-7

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:20
