How Satan Steals Our Authority

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Jesus has taken back ALL authority. This means that everyone else has NO AUTHORITY unless He gives it to them.

So, if the devil has no authority, how does he still do stuff that hurts us? Jesus is not giving Him any authority. Satan obviously got some type of power or authority from somewhere because he is still stealing, killing, and destroying. Where did that ability come from?

Satan can only be empowered by those who have authority. Which means you and me.

How does he do that? Because we are not knowingly handing over what Jesus paid for us to have. Are we?

Could it be that we are unknowingly, yet willingly, relinquishing control of our thoughts and beliefs to a known liar?

For Satan to gain some measure of control, he must bring himself into agreement with one who has authority. The stronger the agreement, the more authority he has. Instead of bringing himself into agreement, he deceives believers into agreeing with him. This doesn’t allow Satan to gain authority, just a measure of influence and control to keep us from understanding and exercising our authority.

Satan would never truly bring himself into agreement with Christ. We observe Satan trying to trick Jesus during their encounter in the wilderness. He attempted to lure Jesus into some type of agreement with him. And Jesus would never give Satan authority now because He is the one who took it from him.

So, he tricks Christians into agreeing with him in the same way.

How?…

He just keeps talking until we make a verbal agreement with him. He is relentless in his attack on our thought life.

When we believe a lie to the point we speak it, we empower the enemy. We give him authority to further deceive us.

What forms that agreement?

Words are creative by nature. The first thing words create are images. Satan uses those images to manipulate our thoughts. Remember, he is looking for agreement. Once he has that verbal agreement, it becomes a covenant. This covenant gives Satan the legal right to have access to our lives.

Satan speaks relentlessly, putting images in our heads. These images are meant to draw us away from the truth and get us to question what we believe. He is looking for any word or action that would indicate agreement. When he sees or hears an indication of agreement, he begins to exert pressure to gain more control. When we believe the lie, we empower the liar. The more of his lies we believe and verbalize, the more influence he gains.

This is why we are warned repeatedly throughout scripture of the power and consequences of words.

Proverbs 18:20-21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

First, Satan lied to Eve and made her doubt what God said. She didn’t take that thought captive, she had a conversation with the devil and just let him keep talking. Entertaining Satan’s lies made her doubt that God’s Word was true. In Genesis 3:6 we see that after Eve had her conversation with the devil, she saw things differently. (images!)

Genesis 3:6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

The only authority he can gain now is a false authority, a counterfeit. He keeps us ignorant and deceived. This prevents us from receiving and enjoying the inheritance that Jesus paid for with His blood. His deception gives the illusion that he has authority, but he doesn’t; he just has a measure of control. As soon as we break the verbal agreement, we renounce any words spoken that gave him access. Then, we can cast him out. At that point, we take back the things he stole, and we strengthen ourselves to defend them.

Matthew 11:11-12 Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.

Jesus took the kingdom back by force, the authority that Adam relinquished to the devil. When the enemy deceives us, he isn’t stealing our authority. He is stealing our revelation of truth surrounding it. If we lose by deception what Christ took by force, we must also take it back by force. Taking it back requires effort and determination.

The Church has relinquished her understanding of spiritual authority in so many areas. The revelation of righteousness, of healing, of the Holy Spirit, and the list gets much longer. The Church is rising up all over the Earth. God is giving His people understanding in these areas. When He pours out His Spirit upon us in the last days, we will have the understanding to steward that outpouring.

We must break those verbal agreements, declare our deliverance. Then refuse to speak anything that agrees with darkness or the curse. We must learn what it means to take thoughts captive and bring them into subjection to truth. To do that, we have to learn how to put on the whole armor of God found in Ephesians 6:10-18.

And that we will cover in the following posts.

JESUS IS COMING!

Stop Playing Show and Tell with the Devil

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Most Christians are familiar with this passage of scripture. It is important however that we understand exactly what this means, and how this plays out in our lives.

So, how does he determine whom he may devour? By playing “Show and Tell.” For example, if we have been hurt by someone, even if we have forgiven them, Satan will relentlessly tempt us with thoughts of bitterness, anger, and resentment. If these thoughts are not taken captive, eventually we will say or do something to acknowledge that these thoughts are effective, thereby telling the devil that his lies are being entertained. In this way, we Show the Devil our weakness and Tell him how we may be devoured.

The unrenewed mind is Satan’s favorite place to prowl and roar. Without a renewed mind, taking thoughts captive can be next to impossible.

Jesus shows us how to take thoughts captive.

When the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness, we see Jesus taking those thoughts captive by speaking the truth, letting the devil know He recognized the deception and was not moved by it. Satan left Him for a more opportune time when he saw that Jesus was not volunteering to be devoured.

When Peter was being used by the devil to speak against Jesus’ destiny, Jesus rebuked Peter sharply, letting Peter know he was being used by the enemy.

Satan can inject thoughts into our heads by speaking to our spirit directly, but his preferred method is to use well-meaning brothers and sisters to speak for him.

When we respond to negative thoughts by speaking or acting in agreement with them, we invite the enemy into our lives to bring us into captivity. We become a landing strip for demonic activity and evil influence.

When thoughts come that are clearly not of God, understand there is another person behind them. A person that hates us and the God we serve. We should not be ignorant of the enemy’s deceptions, but many are because the written word of God does not have its proper place in their lives.

If we flood our hearts and minds with truth (the Bible) we render Satan virtually powerless to deceive us. Diminishing the importance of daily exposure and intake of God’s written word may be Satan’s greatest deception.

Remember that Satan cannot defile you. He can only deceive you into defiling yourself. The only thing that defiles a person is what comes out of their mouth.

Matthew 15:16-20a And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person.

Satan can put thoughts in our minds, but he is not a mind reader. He only knows his tactics are working when we show and tell him.

To guard our mouth is to guard our heart. Being slow to speak and giving our heart time to tell our mouths what to say increases our discernment in these areas and helps us identify the stumbling blocks Satan puts in our path.

Emotional Warfare – exposing Satan’s plan

Many times, Satan will bombard our minds with negative thoughts and sensual images to stir our emotions to the point of physical reaction. Emotional warfare is spiritual warfare. Thoughts and words are spiritual, so he pressures us with these ungodly thoughts in the hope of us reacting with our words and actions. It is our own words that defile us and allow Satan an entrance into our hearts. Our words tell him where we are weak, where to focus his attacks, and whom he may devour. Our words and actions reveal the chinks in our armor, the weaknesses of our faith. Jesus said this about our words,

Matthew 15:11 “it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”

The devil roars in our minds like a lion, seeking whom he may devour. He is looking for those that open their mouth in response to his temptations, showing him where he can most effectively plant his corrupt seed.

The first step in taking thoughts captive is to refuse to give them a voice or act upon them. Once he gets seed into our hearts, he waters that seed with more thoughts until it produces the fruit of more words and actions. It is a devious and highly effective plan that tricks us into embracing fleshly desires and abandoning our walk in the Spirit.

Satan’s Agenda and Guarding Your Heart.

In spiritual warfare, the enemy’s point of attack is our hearts, or the hidden man of the heart referred to in 1 Peter 3:4. When the Bible speaks of our hearts, it is not just referring to our spirits, but all of the eternal parts of our being, the mind, spirit, and soul. These are parts of our being that live on after our physical bodies die. It is the heart of who we are, the core of our being. This heart is the soil where the seed of God’s word is planted, and the Holy Spirit resides.

Satan wants to keep that seed from growing by planting tares and weeds to choke it and keep it from receiving water and light. It is the heart he wants to corrupt because from our heart springs forth the life of God.

When life springs from our hearts, God’s seed gets planted in other people’s hearts. The energy of God that flows from our relationship with Him waters and shines a light on other men’s hearts, making them stronger, causing growth, multiplying God’s army, and growing His influence.

Satan is after our hearts to corrupt what God has planted there. We must be vigilant to guard ourselves against the many deceptions that the enemy throws at our minds and deny him entrance.

Proverbs 4:23 (ESV) Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life.

Satan will bombard our minds with negative thoughts and sensual ideas to stir our emotions to the point of reaction. Emotional warfare is spiritual warfare. Thoughts and words are spiritual, so he pressures us with ungodly thoughts in the hope of us reacting with words and actions. It is our own words that defile us and allow Satan an entrance into our hearts.

Our words tell him where we are weak, where to focus his attacks, and whom he may devour. The devil roars in our minds like a lion, seeking whom he may devour. He is looking for those that open their mouth to show him where he can plant his seed. Once he gets seed into our hearts, he waters that seed with more thoughts until it produces the fruit of more words and actions. It is a devious and highly effective plan.

1 Peter 5:8 (ESV) Be sober minded, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

How do we guard our hearts and minds against his relentless attacks on our minds and emotions? Philippians 4 holds a vital key.

Philippians 4:6-9 (ESV) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these thingsWhat you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Being prayerful and thankful defends us against many of these attacks, but that is not enough. We must choose what we think. Satan will take us captive in our minds if we do not take negative thoughts captive and bring them into obedience to our revelation of Jesus Christ. Once our minds are captive, he has access to our hearts.

When the enemy roars the loudest in our minds, we must force ourselves to think about pure, praise-worthy, positive, and life-giving things. We can’t just think good thoughts; We then must give voice to those thoughts. This is the practice of “taking every thought captive to obey Christ.”
